So my wife can't drive a standard but I have an 88 2wd with the beloved 4.9 and an m5od and neither of us want to take on car payments and she really likes this truck anyways so besides an automatic column what else would I need to put either an aod or a c4 in place of the Mazda Tranny?
wouldnt it just be cheaper to teach her how to drive stick, i mean with a hydrualic clutch its not even that hard. when i was old enough to drive with a permit i jumped into my uncles kia and learned within 2 blocks, then the same day i get in my grandpa's 78 with a manual clutch and then i killed some motors (six times) so with a hydrualic clutch its not that hard to learn.
Get the column, pedals, trans, and linkage and crossmember. Will also need a new driveshaft. Try to get an AOD for a small block engine, or a C6 for a small block. AOD would be better because of the overdrive. Best way to get all of the parts is to buy a donor truck with what you need that of the same layout(cab and bed combo). Neither of these are computer controlled, so a computer swap will not be needed. Some wiring might need to be taken care of, but I'm not exactly sure.
Yeah, teaching her to drive a stick seems like the obvious best answer, but sometimes we have to choose the path of least resistance.
It sounds like the guy will get a lot less grief if he just puts an auto in it.
(I been there, and I feel for ya man...)
I guess I'm really lucky, my wife can drive anything. She can even run a backhoe. Yea I would think teaching her to drive a stick would pay in the long run.

Yea it's a shame,I agree with you guys, she needs to just learn how to drive the damn thing,I love the old truck....my concern is her trying to take off going up a hill and it dying and her rolling back into someone
if women can drive a 18 wheeler than she can drive a little pick up truck ,, and a hill start that is why there is the emergency brake to hold you on the hill so you can work clutch and gas!!!
she should ask her girl friends for who knows how to drive a stick and have them teach her !! Better for you marriage

i should add that you would also need the computer off an automatic of the same era
No he won't.. the AOD and C6 don't have any computer controls.
If the truck has 3.08 gears or worse just get a C6... overdrive won't be any use and won't help fuel milage unless the rear axle also gets 3.73-4.10 gears.

yeah i zoned off a little and though he would just shove an e4od in there, never even gave the other two a though
I helped my wife learn to drive a stick . It was a Subaru with a hill holder option from the factory . That really helped . You use to be able to buy a hill holder add on , ain't seen one in years . I would teach her anyway , just in case she ever needed to drive a stick .
