1990 f150 5.0 4x4 heavy duty suspension auto. My mpg has been decreasing and a heavy fuel odor when idling. My right exhaust manifold is split and I have a rattling in the exhaust. I get a squeal from the belt on start-up due to the high output alternator but I get an additional odd squeal at the very end. My hypothesis is bad air pump, plugged converter which cracked the manifold? I have a very limited budget to fix this. I was considering headers into 1 muffler with 2 out behind the rear wheel. Anyone have this setup? I want as quiet as possible and am only interested in fixing the problem and possibly an increase in performance and mpg. Any help greatly appreciated. I'm getting dizzy looking at all the web sites. 600 budget but did find hooker headers ceramic coated for 195 with os inserts. Thanks
Well Thanks for all the expert advice. What an incredible forum.
With an attitude like that, I can't imagine many people even want to help you at this point. God forbid people didn't take time out of their day to give you absolutely cost free advice.
If you're getting a strong odor of fuel, you should probably investigate that. Check and see if your plugs are black or check for codes to see if your computer has any information on what's going on. Also see if your tank is leaking. If your tank is leaking (or a line when it's under pressure or something of the like) the smell would linger while the truck is idling in one place.
The cracked manifold problem is pretty common. Replace your manifolds with a set of "Summit Racing" brand shorty headers. They send you Pace setter headers that are of very good quality. I have a set myself on my truck. You can do whatever you want with the cat. Just remember that it's illegal to remove the catalytic converter and not replace it, and the heat might have some choice words and/or expensive papers for you.
To replace what you have, a bassani Y pipe and a 3" single in/out muffler will do you just fine. If you want something quiet, walker mufflers are pretty quiet. You can get something like a Thrush turbo muffler which are pretty quiet too, and they probably flow better.
