215/75/15 is the closest modern tire size to stock IMHO.
225 or 235 / 75 or 70 / 15 are common replacements, probably becasue the are easier to find. (and cheaper usually)
Factory literature list a G78/15 as the standard tire for a 72, on a 15/5.5 wheel.
Here's my 2 cents...for what its worth. I too was facing the same dilemma. I found out what size my truck originally came with and through many many hours of searching this is what I came up with.
I am running P235/75/R15 wrapped around American Racing 8 bolt white wagon wheels. They are raised white letters and look real sharp.
When I got my truck, it had 8.75X16.5 up front and 12.5X16.5 out back...neither were original. The 235/75's are 28.9" tall, stocks were 29". The .10 of an inch is a non-factor according to my tire man, who by the way has been in the business for 20+ years.
