I recently took my bronco muddin and the engine bay is really dirty. I don't want to screw anything up because all my wires are exposed as well as the distributor cap. So, I'm planning on washing the engine but I was wondering what would you recommend for cleaning it out? and what precautions should I take to avoid messing anything up?
There are a lot of electrical connections under the hood and soaking them could present issues however, these connectors are made with tight fitting parts and the critical ones are pre-sealed with dielectric grease to keep moisture out. The biggest concerns are actually the most obvious ones. The alternator, the ignition coil, the distributor and the small bank of little electronic devices mounted near the coil should be covered to prevent water damage. Water is insidious so don't risk it. I use freezer bags and electrical tape to seal up any devices and connections that might get waterlogged during cleaning.
The other option is to simply wipe down the engine bay with wet rags. Its tedious and painstaking if you are a perfectionist like I tend to be but it saves the time of sealing up all the devices that don't play well with copious amounts of water.
Your can use water to wash the engine bay, but don't use full pressure, a couple of plastic bags covering the alternator and the distributor should be enough. If you use a pressure washer open the spray and keep the tip of the washer a safe distance appart from any parts of the engine, try to avoid any cables, fittings and vacuum lines.
