We need your help. There's a '94 Ranger that's in good condition except for one problem. It seemed fine but after acceleration, there is some sort of grinding noise and the car slips out of gear. We think it's the clutch since it seemed to be in gear at slow speeds and only at higher RPMs does it slip out. Is this assumption correct?
doesn't sound like a clutch problem to me.
i would plan on changing the trans.
however never had to change a clutch in a ranger yet but have in many other cars and trucks and it's always been around 200
for clutch pressure plate and throw-out bearing.
Yep - it's the tranny. Just replaced mine in my '93. Had the problem you described with the replacement unit, which had to be replaced too. If it was the clutch it would slip, not pop out of gear.
When you're doing the new tranny (I recommend Zumbrota Bearing & Gear for the rebuilt), make sure you do the clutch, etc. and the slave cylinder as well.
