2 Problems

Hello all, first time posting on this site!

1996 F-350 OBS PSD 150k.

Problem #1: Won't go into 4wd. Drive shaft spins, front axle u joints spin one at a time (I am assuming that is correct). It has aftermarket automatic hubs (yes I know they are junk, they came on the truck) and so I am guessing that it is the hubs that need to replaced? Is there some way that I can confirm this?

Problem #2: Check engine lights comes on when first started. Doesn't seem to matter when temp I start it at, but it's just when it is "cold" or first starting it up. If I drive it and shut it off then turn it right back on we are good. After it runs for a bit it turns off. Also it seems that it doesn't have as much power when the light is on and it idles a little lower when the light is on. Short of plugging it in to read codes anything else that I could try, that maybe you guys have run into?

Thank you very much for all the help in advance!

Not even a month old, and I used Rotella.

If the transfer case will turn the driveshaft and u joints, then you've got a hub issue. I just ran into this with my autos.

As for the CEL, I personally would try to get the codes read.

By the way, welcome to FTE!

Yeah I was guessing that it was hubs. Another fella just emailed me a guide to take my autos out and re-grease them up. So going to try that and see if that fixes it or not. Yeah I figured the only way was to get the codes read.

And glad to be here, seems like a lot more support than the other site I am use to using!

It's hard to see in this pic, but the circled piece is the wheel retaining key on the auto hubs. It looks like a half moon snap ring with a tab that fits into a slot on the stub shaft. The tab broke on mine, I'm sure along with other things, rendering them useless. If you have the means, I highly suggest upgrading to manuals. I loved the autos, right up until they left me stranded.

You're not supposed to grease the auto hubs. When I work on mine, I clean the parts and soak them in 80/90, then install.

Welcome to FTE! I'm with Darin on the hubs. You shouldn't grease any hubs, autos or manuals. On the CEL, just a guess, but it sounds like maybe a bad ICP sensor. I would get the codes pulled first though.

Well that is good to know! What is this 80/90 you speak of, and where can I get some?

Thanks! Is a ICP sensor something easy and cheap that a back yard mechanic (like myself) could replace?

80/90 is just oil used in the rear end case.

Is the truck missing when the cel is on or is it just lacking power? ICP is easy to change, but not real cheap. Knowing the code would for sure help.

Not missing at all, just has a lack of power and I noticed it shifts harder as well when the CEL is on.

Just one more question, I purchased some mile marker manual hubs off ebay to replace my autos. Do I need a conversion kit when going from autos to manual hubs?
