building on a budget

like my ad says im trying to get some more power from my truck on a budget and would like some others feedback and input. i have already purchased 373 gears . i have a set of explorer gt40 p heads that i was going to have machined port and poliished is there anything thing else i should do to them? i was looking into an rv cam is this a good desicion? i was told that the stock truck intake is the best setup..and was also told to go with long tube headers. should i do anything to the fuel or ignition setup? also with theses types of mods what am i looking at for tourqe and hp? any comments or suggestions would be great thanks

I would get shortie headers so you can re use the stock y pipe. If your doing a custom set up, then all bets are off, long tubes it is.

i do plan on installing a custom true dual exust with an h pipe . from what i understand the long tube headers would give me more low end tourqe

Is your truck mass air? If not you're going to push the SD system beyond what it can adapt to with all these mods so a MAF conversion and fuel system upgrade should be added to your list. The motor could make upwards of 350hp/tq depending what cam you use.

For under $200 you can upgrade all you ignition components minus the dizzy to MSD or your other brand of choice: coil, cap, rotor, wires. Regap the plugs to 55 & bump the timing to ~14* (or just back off a degree if it knocks). This is also known as the 6litre tuneup and puts some life back into the motor.

it is a maf truck. and i thought about upgradeing the fuel system but really not sure what all part i should upgrade as far as injecters and pump. also for the ignition under 200 what all are you ncluding in that quote?i planned on a biger coil wires plugs and a better control module. also i am in the process of molding a ram air on the hood and im was going to mod the intake to make it a functioning ram air

After Uncle Sam ponied up last spring, I went to Advanced and got MSD coil, cap, wires, and motorcraft plugs for around $180 IIRC. Regapping and timing bump is free! . Just be sure to get 8mm or larger wires if you upgrade the coil.

thanks cracker that sounds like a good plan. and as far as bumping the timeing i wonder how much i would go with it and with the fuel i would like some suggestions as to what i need to do with it without going crazy on parts. i hope to have all these mods completed by mid summer. each part isnt alot of money but they add up qucik. each payday i been buying something and leave it in the garage until i have a good amounh saved to do work on the weekends

It does add up quick, but as I have to remind my wife paying $100-150 every few months sure beats a monthly payment. Plus, you can actually tinker with these things without all the computer crap. Best of luck on the build and keep us posted!

Research some posts conanski has about which cam to use... You won't be sorry you read it.
The longtubes are what you're going to want, but the headpipes aren't that bad. If you cut off stock cat and go duals from there you'll be fine. Do you need emissions in your area?

Buy a 190lph pump for your tanks, or a 255 if your goals are gonna increase later. Stock injectors will be fine for now, just get an adjustable regulator to be able to tweak it some. Until you get a custom tune you're limited to stock 19s.

What transmission do you have. Maybe buy a valvebody from punisher or get a shift kit to help with the extra power.

thanks for the info untamed. i have a stock 4r70w which i have to replace soon and im thinking of converting to a manual but havnt looked into which would be the best for my application. i just replaced the fuel pump with a stock so i think ill wait till i get farther down the road on my mods before i go and replace it again. and also for the headers i have to wait and see if the heads that i have ordered are the gt40 or gt40p im not sure but i belive it does matter with the headers because of the angle of the plugs. and thank god were im at there are no emmisions test so im free on that part.
