I have a 2003 F250 Crew Cab with the 7.3 PSD What is my MAXIMUM hitch weight (5th Wheel) that won't be pushing everything to the limit? The 5th wheel were considering has a hitch weight of 2090# and I think thats too high!! The salesman doesn't think so (naturally) I just want to have fun and not be burdened by pulling something that is too big or even borderline too big, I want room to spare if you know what I mean .what do you people think???
Your Gross Combined Vehicle Weight can't exceed 20,000 lbs and your truck weight+pin weight can't exceed 8,800 lbs (GVWR).
Your truck weighs about 6500 lbs but it is best to weigh it loaded with luggage, people, and fuel. Then add your 2090 lbs pin weight and hope it ain't over 8800 lbs.
Well you may have a problem if you have not taken your truck to the scales yet. I did a couple of weeks ago and almost fell over when they told me that it was 7150 with no one in the truck. One thing to remember the PSD is HEAVY and the 250 is rated at 3/4 ton payload and that means that you will only have about 1600 # for passengers and pin weight and such to stay inside the 8800 GVWR. If you note the charts look like they say the 5th wheel rate is 12800 # but look in the notes and you will find a CC 4x4 is derated to 10400# . I think you are going to find that you are way overweight with that rig as far as GVWR. The first thing you need to do is go get the truck weighed it will open your eyes big time.
I read somebody elses post where they had the same truck, filled the tank with fuel and it weighed 7200#, so I'm using that figure as my base weight and trying to get as much below 1600 pounds hitch weight as I can and still stay under the 10,400 with the trailer loaded. This is like a jigsaw puzzle trying to make it all fit together...unless you ask an RV salesman then it's easy. "Sure it will pull it, no problem!!"
Just remember all the salesman needs to do is get you off the lot with your new rig anything after that is your problem and your payments for the next decade. I am in the process of buying also so I will be watching it myslef and find it hard to believe that you can be in spec for all. By the way do not forget the hitch it weighs about 200 - 220# more.
What I am looking at is a 30' that has a GVWR of under 10,000 and that will streach the truck GVWR but not the GAWR so may have to consider that the best that can be done.
