The more I think about it the more I want to keep my diesel. The MPG story above is important to me, regarding gearing, as I see other fuel options I haven't read about yet but heard about (biodiesel fuel). And if all I'm hauling is a 25 lb toddler, I think a f350 may be an overstatement. Now if it was a 4x4.....
My truck is a 1986 F350 crew cab 4x4. Heavy. It has 4.10's. It has a T19 four speed, and a gear vendor overdrive (0.78 gear reduction) so 3.20 final drive ratio. That combination gives me 17 mpg highway, even naturally aspirated and living at 7,000' elevation. See why I say the bigger the truck the more the diesel advantage? A ZF 5 speed transplant is in the works (so double overdrive) as well as a better cam, turbo and intercooler. Hopefully I should see the occasional 20 mpg even with the big crew...
