I was in the basement tearing down a transmission - when I got as far as I wanted I started putting stuff away when I decided to wash some parts - I was scrubbing away at the parts in the sink when I felt a cold spray - It was either the dog with a squirt gun ow the water heater that was right behind me - I started looking at the water heater and the supply line nut at the water tank had split - I shut everything down and was going to wait until tomorrow when I remembered I had a slightly used one from my old tank - Wrench, wrench, wrench and it is good as new
If I hadn't been down there tonight I would have had a new indoor pool
Yep. You got lucky! If that had happened to me, I would have been on a cruise ship or a spaceship somewhere watching my house float away on CNN. I opened the door to my basement years ago and saw a swimming pool one morning. My deep freezer was running very nicely as it floated by me still plugged in!!
I'm still trying to figure that one out - I had been in and out of there at least 3 time in a 20 minute period and hadn't seen a thing - I had even dropped a paper towel on the floor that I hadn't picked up yet - No sound just cold water (Better then hot) on the back
Oh did I mention that it was about 9 0:clock when it happened, On a Saturday night?
Tim The Toolman was looking over my shoulder
one reason I shut the water off at the street, when we go away,
I thought I was the only one that did that. I also turn off the power to the shop. If the house burns down I only loose my furniture, clothes, etc. If the shop burns down I loose my flathead and my tools.
I was once at a home of a friend of my mother-in-law's house installing a gas, free standing heater unit. as my partner was behind the dryer tying into the gas supply the washer water supply started leaking at a rate that would have scared the 88 yr old woman to death....if she would have heard it at all. I went back to the hardware store and bought the parts I needed to fix the water leak....about $25. then my partner/helper moved the washer dryer out to fix the problem and put everything back the way it should be. we spent about an extra 1 1/2 hr to fix the problem. when we were about to leave I handed her the bill for the gas stove and told her exactly what I had to do to correct her water leak. she was so thankful and happy that we had taken the time to help her out....and greatful too! she gave me $5 to split with my partner. that's a total net loss of about a hundred bucks.....damned if you do....damned if you don't
Yesterday I was working in the garage and I decided to tap into a water line so I could run a line over to the garage fridge for the icemaker. I have a 3/4" supply line in the garage with a loop from an old water softener system. The 2 ends were the tank used to be are just hooked together. I pulled them apart and slid the valve a little ways to confirm I had water. Sure enough, good flow of water AND a valve that wouldn't shut off!
I toyed with it for a bit and then decided to hook the pipe back together (not an easy task with water flowing) I finally got it back together (along with a decent soaking). Yup, I turned my garage and workbench into a swimming pool. I'm a rocket genius!

After two or three relatives having toilet supply hoses blow while on vacation, I'll shut them off at the wall valve. Especially since the water pressure at my house is 90 psi!!
