[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Jul-02 AT 03:53 PM (EST)]Why would my dash brake lights come on? I notice that the brake light and the ABS light were both on today. Every time I start the truck the lights are off but after maybe 20 minutes both lights come on. They only turn off after I restart the truck. Is this a sensor thing?
I think the brake light is pointing to something and the ABS light is confirming the problem. These are 2 separate but related systems. The brake light can be lit by low brake fluid, the park brake out of position (or a bad sensor switch) or a problem with the mechanics of the master cylinder/apportioning valve. The ABS light will illuminate for a fault with that system only but uses the brake system when it operates by modulating the pressure to the rear brakes. For example, if the apportioning valve is not working correctly the brake light will come on as a fault of that system and the ABS will not be able to work so its light will come on.
As above be sure both master cylinder fluid chambers are full and there are no leaks in your lines or rear slave cylinders. Check to be sure that the park brake is fully released and is not dragging. On this year truck ABS was only on the rear so concentrate the troubleshooting back there. Could be a stuck slave cylinder, a blocked brake line, low fluid, jammed park brake cable, but I repeat myself....
