i have a 66 f-100 with manual 3 speed with overdrive
won't go in reverse, forward gears work fine
pulled side plate off and everything looked good so i
assumed the linkage needed adjusting--wrong
any ideas?
thanks, this is a great site!
I don't remember exacly how the overdrive works, but I know it freewheels (allows the wheels to spin faster than the engine) when it is engaged. I don't think you can go into reverse when the overdrive does this. I believe there is a solenoid that might be causing the overdrive to stay engaged. This could be a bad solenoid or the electrics could be bad.
My suggestion would be to buy a shop manual off from motorhaven as it has a good description of how that unit operates.
I can't tell ya too much on what's wrong or how to fix it, but having a 3-speed w/ od myself, it will not go into revervse if the overdrive is on. Took me a few times at the grocery store to figure that one out .
There is a slim chance that the governor circuit is shorted, causing the OD to stay "in". However, if this is true, the truck should not roll backwards under any circumstances with the key on. Will it go in reverse without the ignition on? I say it's a slim chance because it would be quite obvious as you would be starting in low OD (requires a little more "slipping" of the clutch) and then shifting to 2 OD and 3 OD which would cut down on your performance drastically! Actually, if you can pull the "lockout" lever, then the tranny can't be in OD and I would guess your problem must be in the tranny itself. Wolverine, you must have a custom installation whereby you can "turn on" the OD at will. Otherwise, your OD should automatically "drop out" when your speed drops below 22 MPH (more or less) and you should have no problem with reverse.
