You know I really respect and admire people that can do the whole thing themselves. I envy them the ability, the resources, often the shop to do the work.
I did drop in the engine and did most of the research and parts sourcing, but there is no substitute for having the tools, the shop, and knowledge and desire to use them.
Of course, I also probably made over $200k by using that time to work and get paid instead of playing with my truck. Maybe when I'm retired!
I restored a 1957 International Harvester and did all the bodywork and painting myself and only spent alittle over 1500 bucks on it including new(to me) rims and tires and purchase price ($150)
Man, I would love to see your parts list with prices to only have $1500 in a kinda rare truck like that while doing a total frame off restoration. I would imagine obtaining the original upholstery for that truck would run you $200 plus.... ordering a windshield for that truck, what, $125 plus maybe? I've done several of these model trucks and mustangs and when you start going original....it gets expensive.

The interior is the one thing I haven't gone original on actually because of that reason. We had a local lady recover it and were lucky the cushion was in great shape. I also had a hard time finding original wing window seals for under 400 buck per side. we ended up using some cheap straight seal stuff from a local parts store and cut it to make it fit.
so a parts list with prices best I can remember would be
free parts truck (got it from a friend that was gonna ditch it for nothing)
$150 for truck
$800 for paint and body filler and primer
$150 for rims and tires (long story on how I got these HAHA)
$200 for windshield
$150 for interior work
and $100 for miscellaneous parts needed. there may have been another 100 or 2 in there somewhere but that's the best price list i can give. definately will keep a better record of how much was spent on the f100.
I will say this was an odd ball restore compared to many because a lot of the parts I needed couldn't be replaced easy so we made do with what we had or built/ repaired what was needed. Plus the only body panel that was a problem was my left rear fender and I would have gladly paid a couple hundred bucks to replace that because I spent most of a few months just using the hammer and dolly on it. If you add in the time I spent on this it would be way over the 20k (even though I wouldn't sell it for 1/2 a million) but since I am keeping it for life I don't figure that in. We also didn't need to touch the driveline because it was in great shape and still starts and runs like new.

It was on the road but right now it is in need of some repair work...... my dad accidently dropped a hammer on the front end so I need to fix it sometime. Only problem is its parked at their house and i'm not there much anymore.
That's what I was trying to get at. A total frame off is expensive when replacing parts. By the time you replace bushings, shocks, brakes, etc your easily approaching $500 just on the suspension alone. Tpdaniels in this thread can testify to that.......
Nevertheless, for $1500, you have a very nice looking truck for what you have in it.. Although the deal you got in purchasing 2 trucks for $150 is far and between finding a 67-72 for that kind of price. And if you do....your basically starting with a shell. The price for a complete set of just the middle chrome for one of these trucks will run you around $600. Original seat upholstery is $200. If you could do a frame off on one of these trucks for under $1500, I'm sending all my work to you. LOL. By looking at the 68 you are going to start on , you may find that out. The grill on the truck you can't buy new and one on eBay for example will run you $300 for maybe a driver quality one and upwards of $800+ for a show quality one.

I fully agree with you on that LOL. I did get super lucky on my IHC and I know for a fact my f100 will cost close to 10k by the time I completely finish it. But if you think about the cost of a new Ford truck with even the most basic package you will still be better off doing one of these old beauties for if nothing else the looks alone.
The lucky part for me though again I got a 69 f100 donor truck that the whole front clip is getting taken from for free from another relative that just wanted it hauled away. The grille has a bent bar or 2 but I will hammer that out. Plus I dont plan on putting the belt line trim back on so that saves some cash and also I have a good seat in the donor that will be used. Still lots of blood sweat and tears(mostly in the form of money) will go into any project you start.

Yes sir, I agree. Although the grill on the 69 is painted vs the aluminum one on your 68.....big difference in looks and especially price. The chrome and aluminum pieces on these trucks is what kills you when restoring one.....and most of the time all the trim, bells and whistles are what makes these trucks stand out.

After driving it a few months I decided it needed more power so I bought a 68 T-Bird 390, it's in the machine shop as I write this being rebuilt, Not going to be a radical rebuild but it will have new pistons, Comp Cam Kit, Eledbrock Intake with a Holley Carb, Header's, new Exhaust and a new Mini Starter to clear the headers, Like I said it never ends..........
