Starter Fit?

I had a previous thread about a regular starter vs a mini starter. I'm trying to find a mini starter that isn't in the $200+ range, but this thread is really about starter fitment....

I am looking at this starter...

http://www.dbelectrical.com/p-9936-new-ford-mini-pmgr-racing-starter-302-351-higher-torque-3205-sfd0001.aspx

The guys at DB electric say it'll fit my '71 351W/ 89ish T5. But a guy I know and trust with old fords isn't so sure. Mainly because the web page says it is primarily for automatic trans instead of manual. Any thought on whether or not this will fit?

And that leads to another question...

How do I know if a starter "fits" when I bolt it up? The bolt pattern of the "full size" starter I currently have installed is fine. It bolted up after a bit of a wrestling match. But how do I know if the starter gears are going to properly engage the fly wheel? In other words, if a starter bolts up ok, does that mean it fits? Or is there more to it, ie. the inside engagement of the teeth? If so, how can I tell if its fitting on the inside?

Thanks,
Tyler

Tyler???? Is that you????
I can't answer your question really, but you need to know how many teeth are on your flywheel. I wouldn't want to just crank it and hope for the best either.
Hope all is going well!

Ok thanks. I used to know how many. I wonder why no one has asked me that as I've been inquiring about starters?

Maybe there is a specific number of teeth for the 351W I can't really say...I'm not very knowledgeable of the flywheel\flexplate teeth numbers, but there are some differences out there. Not sure if the starters have different teeth numbers either. Don't let me confuse you.
I was kinda trying to get someone to notice your post!

If you have a T5 it will have 157 teeth on the flywheel and the automatic trans starter is the correct one. I just went through all this for my set-up.

Man that's great info! Truckee would you mind sending me any info you have electronically? I'll pm you my email. So given your answer, the starter in the link above will work?

Best, Tyler

Hi there,

I went through a similar problem a while back(well sort of similar).

I had a 302 with auto c6 with block hugger headers and I needed a mini starter but didnt want to pay a war pension for one. So I found db electrical and made some phone calls. I sat in the garage while on the phone and their tech guys measured the starter cone while I measured the distance into the bellhousing to ensure a correct fit, help like that is always great from vendors. They ensured me that it would fit, I ordered the starter and paid around $60.00 for it, bolted it up to the bellhousing and the fit was perfect. Possibly one of the best starters that I have ever had on a vehicle, it doesnt even make the regular ruh, ruh, ruh of a starter, it cranks the engine the first time.

The starter I bought was the same one your looking at, by far the best $60.00 Ive spent.

Best wishes.

No problem at all, they are great to work with and I would recommend them for sure, and not to mention, a lot easier on the checkbook!

Just ordered it. They swore up and down that it was the right starter for my application. Thanks fellas. I'll let you know when it gets here and I install it. Getting close to test firing our engine. Gonna be an exciting day!

I look forward to hearing about your test fire. I did mine about a month ago and I still can't get over the awesome rumble of the engine, it brings the project to life!

Best wishes and keep us posted!

A word of caution when using the new "high-torque" starters...most that I have seen (including the one in my truck) come with an internal solenoid. What this means is that you no longer need the stock starter relay. If you wire the stock relay in series with the starter solenoid you may find that you get a nasty scraping sound when the starter bendix disengages. This is due to the added delay in having two relays in series. I know of a couple of people who upgraded to the new high-torque starter and were disappointed because it appeared that the starter was not disengaging properly. I would speak with the DB rep to make sure that you get the wiring issues straight before you install the starter. Let us know how it works out for you...the one I bought is a little fancier, has an adjustable mounting flange that I needed because of my headers but I am sure that the internals are similar.

With my 52 on the test fire(which I have done a frame off restoration and gutted all original wiring) I needed 4 wires only to make the engine start. With the db electrical starter, the solenoid is built on top, you need a ground, a hot wire that runs to your positive battery post, and then the actual hot wire that you use to touch to the positive post to crank the starter, and then I have an hei distributor so I only needed a Hot wire running to the positive post to crank the distributor.

Let me know if I can help.
