Apparently I do not know how to use the search on here. I am looking for the threads on the front axle's for the Super Duties that had the #'s codes to tell you which axle was on the front of your SD........Dana 50 or 60. I know I have a Dana 50, but have a chance to buy a Dana 60 from a wreck. But would just like to confirm the #'s before I do. Truck was wreched in rear. Also, wouldn't this axle be a bolt in? I think?
Itried searching front hte beginning but it would not? Then by thread title, then by etc. etc. etc. somebody put me out of my misery!! Thanks.

There should be a Model # (i.e., 50, 60,..) imprinted on the right lower web on the case.
Thanks Tankhead. I was also wondering about the tag that is attached to the right side axle tube on the back side. I know there was a long thread on here somewhere...but i'll be darned if I can locate it.
Thanks
If you take the fill plug out of yours and look at what's directly behind it and do the same on the other you can tell immediately if they're different. It's obvious.
If it's a d50 you will be looking at one of the carrier bearing main caps. If it's a 60 (bigger) you'll be looking at part of the carrier. The main cap will be further over.
. I know I have a Dana 50, but have a chance to buy a Dana 60 from a wreck.
He's looking at buying one. He knows his is a Dana 50. All 2002 and 2003 Superduties have a Dana 60 front end. All srw Superduties in 1999, 2000 and 2001 have the dana 50.
Yea but is it a reverse unit and will it work...correct rotation etc.
And I know he's got a 50 I meant the one he's looking for. sorry for the confusion.
I'm sure Stumpy isn't looking to put an axle out of something other than a Superduty in his truck. The lug pattern would be different and he wouldn't be able to put his wheels on it.
Stumpy as long as the new front axle is out of a Superduty then what I said applies. If not then it's useless.
Also unless the front end of the wreck is totally wasted you should be able to tell from the parking lights and headlights whether it's a 2002 or newer or the older 2001- . That's what determines which front axle they have.
Thanks guy for all your help. Yes mine is a Dana 50, with all the chat on here about what it costs to fix those stupid unit bearings I figure i'm money ahead in the long run to get a used 60. Deffinetly need s to be out of SD so the bolt pattern is the same, ESOF....... will work, or well it will all hook up anyway. there I said it....ESOF.... Lets all watch.
I looked up the part for a 2002 front end it said dana 60 high pinion reverse. Thats the only thing i'm thinkin about. They didn't change the direction of the drive or transfer case did they??
That's correct. The 60 will bolt right in. I'm wondering about the bearing issue. I didn't think the 60's use a different bearing than the 50 does. I thought from the differential out it is all the same. This is all speculation on my part though.
I have heard from an 02 or 03 owner that has mentioned the service manual saying to grease or lube the front bearing as part of the service so maybe you're right. I would be curious to know if anyone here with a 02 or 03 has had it apart and knows if it's a sealed bearing or serviceable.
