I bought a business and with this business came a 1997 F700 dump truck. I know this part of the forum is for 99 and newer but i didn't see a place for older heavy duty trucks. Now heres the problem. On the passenger side there's a few snapped off exhaust manifold bolts. Well the previous owner never fixed them and kept running the truck. Well eventually the #6 cylinder lost both manifold bolts. I take it from the vibration a small piece of the head where the manifold connects to #6 cracked and its now missing a small 1/4 in piece that blows flame out of it. Its also down on power. It runs but cant haul a load. It has 117k on it. Is it worth fixing? Can I throw a little weld on it and grind it? If not where can i get a head? I find car 429 heads but i know they run a small cc. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I think the 429 uses the same heads as the 460. Parts compatibility on big block Fords can be tricky sometimes, though. You might be able to get replacement heads from someplace like Blaine's Motor Supply or City Motor Supply.
$500 for a remanned head don't seem to bad i'm a little worried about what other problems lurk. Gonna soak the hell out of the other manifold bolts that are left. Is there a possibility that by running that truck with that manifold leak for so long that it could have damaged a valve?
Yes, the quicker cool down can warp an exhaust valve, the lack of back pressure could also effect the over power from that cylinder. New heads fixes the valve issue....
Dont worry, your engine is probably fine. Those things never had power from the start. If the truck weighs over 10K un loaded and it has trouble getting up to highway speeds on an incline thats what you get..
I would suggest you dont spend much money trying to boost the power on that thing.. Not a good engine for the application unfortunately..
Id say save yourself 500 bucks and dont buy a new head. Just weld the head and grind it down.. Pre heat and post heat..
