Flywheel inspection cover

Ok. I'm lost on this one. I can't find this anywhere for the manual 5spd tranny. Do you know where I can find the flywheel inspection cover? Mine is missing some bolts, and I'm not sure if it has a gasket or not on it.. I've checked every where but Napa, and the scrap yard, which might be my only option left at this point.. I've checked all the major parts overstock, like rockauto, parts geek, jc whitney, and a few others, nothing comes up, it's like the part is non-existant for the manual...

Will go through the supplement again today, maybe it's shown, but no part number listed...

Maybe the dealer. They are to hard to get.

They do not use a gasket.

If you have the cover then just get new bolts

I have the cover, but it looks like some of the cover is missing metal, so even with new bolts and a big washer, it wouldn't guarantee a seal..

I'll call up Ford today. Hopefully It isn't a ridiculous price for it. Otherwise, to the salvage yard!

You're best off welding them up to make them stronger. That was the plan with mine, but I said F-it and just left it there in the scrap pile.

The bolts back themselves out on their own, the cover shatters itself. If the one bolt comes out it can put a hole in your oil pan.

blah blah blah.

Screw that noise.

If that's the case, what's the whole point of having the cover? Does it make getting to the flywheel easier to switch out? I'm not one entirely about aesthetics but if there is fuel that is leaking into there, I'm just worried if it might cause some problems. In the meantime, I would say F-it just because there are more important things for me to worry about if it's not hurting anything. That, and I don't think having a welder in the back of my truck would be advisable, and definitely not allowed to be in my room.. My Squad Leader would blow a head gasket if I did. Anyway, calling ford, see what they can do for me.

It's a dust cover to help keep dust out and bad weather out.

If you have a fuel or oil leak, what will happen is the oil/fuel will puddle down in the pan and the flywheel will graciously lap it up and throw it all over your clutch for you.

Then it must have ordered the big cup, and drinks it like a messy 3yo, cuz I found a puddle where that cover is and my buddy thought it was oil. It was still dark out when we were finishing up with PT though. If there's another puddle under my truck when I leave for work in the morning tomorrow, I'm going to have to say the safe bet is my fuel bowl is leaking somewhere.

If it's throwing it over my clutch, I haven't noticed any slippage, or loss of power on shifting.. so hopefully, it will last until I replace it with a better clutch and flywheel.

Update as of a few minutes ago: just got off the phone with the Ford dealership: 40 somethin bucks. Should be here by friday. Hopefully it's the right part, and he said he'll see what they can do about the bolts it needs that are missing...

At least this will give me piece of mind to put focus back on the cooling system. Which is just about A1 priority right now. Last thing I want is a siezed water pump and a blown head gasket would be the least of my worries. Saturday can't come soon enough.

40 bucks?
from ford?

sweet!

It's nothing special on the bolt though.

If you get fuel on your clutch, it will bearly work. Slippy slip slip slip.

Then I guess it hasn't got that far yet then(hopefully). If the weather is nice and hot this weekend, maybe I'll keep it open to air it out, and let the diesel evaporate, and do a good wipe down of that area. I'll make sure to take some pictures.

Yea, I expected an arm and a leg, took the guy a good 15 minutes to find the part I was looking for. Didn't have to pay up front, so hopefully it's the right part. Hell, even the transmission shop didn't have anything for the truck(yet he had a 95 PSD sitting out front).

As long as I'm off work by 5 on Thursday, I can get out there to pick it up by 6 as long as I don't catch all the traffic going off post!

Are you saying your flywheel is just sitting open to the elements right now?

And not a problem, I was already planning on doing that, seems like this little cover would otherwise be a PITA to find anyway, short of welding a plate on there, or filling the holes with JB weld and using a pop rivit to hold it in.

As much as Tennessee has "elements". I notice the fellas who opt to let their flywheels go bottomless live in places where they don't expect to drive in snow deep enough to contact that part of the truck. Drive down one unplowed street after an 18-incher here, and you'll want that cover.

I've covered mine in water, salt, mud and snow.

No issues.

Now, it doesn't much care for the fact it got soaked in fuel a few months ago when the fuel bowl seal decided to leak.
I'd be screwed if I didn't have the clutch I do.

Well I don't know how soaked it's got. There have been a few times this winter some splooshed out when I added some diesel911 to get her started.. No big puddle this morning, just a small spot, probably some fuel still trapped in the cracks. I'll feel better when I get that part in tomorrow! Even still, if I still have power, then the clutch is still good, I just hope it doesn't decide to develop a taste for diesel fuel!(just one more mouth to feed )
