They aren't that important!!

I believe this is the piece you want:

2012 FORD F-350 SUPER DUTY Parts - Tousley Ford Parts Depot

It's just a piece of plastic that either comes molded to fit the stripper's pole or flat if the pole is absent. I was just looking at one for a MSRP of $100 but the Ford parts list seems to have changed a bit. Double check this, but it isn't that big an issue. On one of our 2012 Superduty's we got a scrap of diamondplate aluminum and had it sheared to fit. After drilling and countersinking for the mounting hardware, it cost about $60, most of that for the shearing. We also had it Linex'd to match the rest of the truck bed. The plastic version is pretty tough but not necessarily as good as the diamond plate. If you're really sliding heavy loads across it all the time, I'd go with the diamond plate. The plastic tends to flex and with large cargo being moved back and forth I've lost a couple of the plastic clip fasteners, although the big torx fasteners did their job.

Get your load floor at the same place once you're digging through old wrecked trucks.

That diagram shows #16 as the rear step. I need the CAP for that. Most tailgate caps are one-piece. With the step it's a 3-piece design. Notice there is no detail # shown for that cap...

I also hate the huge lump caused by the stripper pole recess area but not in a hurry to change that out.

Thanks, though!!

On one truck here I left the step but removed the stripper pole. The step is completely out of the way and flush with the tailgate. If you wanted, you could get an aftermarket tailgate lip cap and cover everything but it's unnecessary. The problem people have is with the pole, and this takes care of everything. There are cover plates for both with and without the pole. Just choose the one for use without the pole. I'd doublecheck the parts with a dealer (and I don't remember the part number I ordered) but you can be sure you're getting the right part. To be clear, the flat replacement part (which for me had an MSRP of just under $100) replaces the plate with the molded recess for the pole, and covers everything from the bottom of the tailgate to the upper lip. Same mounting holes, just no recess for the pole. Make sense?

I don't even know what this means...

That was my suggestion for locating the plastic piece on the step, or getting the whole step for that matter.

That's not the part I'm looking for. I need the cap - the part at the very top of the tailgate when it is in the closed position. I have them, they are just pueblo gold (tan) in color. I want to swap them to black like the caps along the bedrails...

I had them dyed but the color has faded or chipped a lot so too much of the tan shows through.

You know when you grab ahold of the step to pull it out? the part you grab - that's what I am talking about. it "flips up" to unlock the step so you can pull it out. so there is that piece, plus a separate piece on each side.

Thank you for mentioning the step covers. Because of your hassle, I'm considering doing a mix of rubber cement glue, with epoxy to make a tacky coating. at least on the bumper step space. The insert steps may get to thick if it's added, but it's an option I'm planning because of getting an older used vehicle that needs fixing.

My version of the tailgate step. Always in place ready to use and near impossible to steal. You can just make out the back one if you look closely. It's mounted into the side of the hitch and is right beside the rear bumper. Works well with the tailgate down or up. The further ahead one allows me easy access to my drybox or enables stepping up into the box too. Custom jobbies not store bought.

For a 99-07 truck you need a left side hinge. For the swap. I had a regular no step 08+ tailgate laying around and tossed it on my 05. I also pit a hose clamp on the rt side as a theft deterrent. I have a 16 as well and hate the pole on the step setup. My 6yr old likes the step makes it easy to climb into the back of a cclwb 4x4 with factory 20s

The step is almost a necessity for the newer trucks. Mine did not come with one, and I deeply regret not getting it. This truck sits too high to get in it easily anymore for me. So rather than do a tailgate swap just to get the step, I got this Tailgate Step Ladder from Amazon. So far it works great. I made my own "stripper pole" from a 2X2 that I put in the rear stake hole. I need to figure out a better way to get something permanent, but it work really well. So far it has not been any problem. I have not "used the hell out of it", but have used it many times. Time will tell for long term.

I really like the new tailgate with the stripper pole. The truck did not come with the girl.
