I've got a 96 f150 with the 4.9l i got it over a year ago and just recently my heat went from hot to luke warm and the needle on the dash went from sitting between the no in normal to below it i replaced the thermostat but it didnt fix the problem even with 2 hours of burping the system. I just replaced my radiator, water pump, and another new thermostat now the needle is sunk even lower on my dash and i only get heat when im accelerating or going 50mph or higher. can anyone help me out I'm very good at fixing cars but this is the first problem since going from dodge to ford and im stumped
it turned out my radiator was heavy so it was clogged at the bottom and i had sludge build up in my water pump so i just did a flush and put in new parts and plan on doing another flush in the next month or so but the heat worked one day and the temp gauge was normal and the next morning it was luke warm and below normal ill look into the vacume lines but other than that idk i also had to replace the coolant temp sensor due to it breaking
My next guess was going to be clogged heater, bad water pump, or something along those lines. But, the blend door is the simple one to check and fix, so i was thinking K.I.S.S.
Completely flush the coolant system. Remove t-stat when performing this. Accelerate and decelerate the engine while flushing. Drain as much water from coolant system. Purchase, then test MOTORCRAFT OR NAPA 192*F t-stat. Verify it opens and closes by dropping it in pot of boiling water. Install. Throw away any Stant or off-brand t-stat. Perform blend door checks as stated by earlier users. Verify that radiator cap is in good condition. These fail and lots of dollars get thrown away while it was a $12 cap. Again, avoid Stant. Motorcraft is $12 or $16...its been a few years.

This ^^^^.
The fact that your temperature gauge is reading low means that in all likelihood everything is fine with your HVAC system. It's the engine which is not coming up to temp properly and that almost assuredly points to the thermostat as the problem.
I'm not one to jump on the "use Motorcraft parts only" bandwagon for no valid reason but in the case of thermostats I will. It seems there's a big difference in quality that favors Motorcraft thermostats vs. after-market.
