Hi all, I'm new to this board. I have a 1995 Ford F-150 4x4, and I was wondering if the frame is the same as what's on a 3/4 ton about the same age. I have been told that the frame should be the same except for the cross supports. Someone said that there are more supports on a 3/4 ton. Anyway, I am wanting to convert it to a 3/4 ton with a solid front axle, (probably a Dana 60), with a NV4500 tranny and not sure about the transfer case just yet. This is part of a buildup for a later engine swap.
There are a few other differences between a ½ ton and a ¾ ton. How many lug nuts are on a ½ ton’s rims? How many on a ¾ ton, ever wonder why a ¾ ton truck has more? What about brakes and suspension? GVWR? GCVWR?
The only way I know of converting a ½ ton pickup into a ¾ ton is to sale the ½ and buy a ¾ ton. This is also the safest way of converting a ½ into a ¾ ton.
the front frame rails are different on the 3/4 ton.
You can have brackets welded on and mount the leafs up front, I have a friend who did this to a van of his.
Or there is an article on the board describing how to put the solid axle under your truck (with coil springs)
He used the dana 44 up front and converted it to 8 bolt. All you do is change everything from the spindle out, axles are the same
I converted my TTB to 8 bolt, and put in a sterling 10.25 rear end, been running it a few years now without any problems.
I did mine for the bigger brakes and bearings to run bigger tires and have it reliable.
If you plan to do heavy hauling, you should look into a 3/4 ton truck.
Checkout the new Fabritech Solid Front Axle Conversion Lift Kit. www.setstr8.com This is the setup that I am getting ready to do to my 1995 F150 4X4. You can also see it at www.natltire.com I'm trying to figure out the rear wheel speed sensor situation right now. Let me know if you can help.
Hey All,Ive looked into this myself. The biggest difference is the Thickness of the frame rails. All the holes should be available for whatever you want to do,A new frame from ford is about 1,500 t0 1,800 dollars and thats stripped. The components that make a 3/4 truck what it is a long list,I understand even the brake lines are heavier.I'm talking the metal lines, brake booster and this is the little stuff.I changed a frame on a 1974 chevy truck some 22 years ago,set the bent truck and salvaged frame side by side and got lots of help from buddies in the airforce. It took 2weeks.And the salvaged frame was not much better.Yes I had the original straightened. But it was a poor job.If I did do this again, and had thought of changing out my 1/2 sb frame for a 3/4 sb frame.I would get a New Frame from ford. Thanks people,Listening to the new Bruce Springsteen album."The Rising"
