I have been searching around to upgrade from my old 7.3 and for the past year I have had my heart set on a brand new 6.7. I wanted a 6.7 because it would be new and I have always been afraid of the 6.0 and 6.4. But recently after doing a LOT of research on the 6.0, it seems that it can be an extremely good engine with a little work. It would be nice to pay half of what I would on a new 6.7.
I found an immaculate 2006 F350 Lariat crew cab 6.75 bed with only 50k on it. It is a good distance away though (couple hours) and I think I have found most of the things to look for when looking at it but I was wondering if I could have your opinions about it.. I plan on doing a lot of bulletproofing once I get it. I am factoring around 1,500 for this. Is that reasonable?
What I have found to look for so far is:
-Low coolant level- could this be EGR or Oil cooler? Someone also said a white residue around the cap?
-Make sure he has used all ford oem filters and oil filter cap
-Is there a recal on the updated parts from ford that this guy may have had done already like the updated blue spring?
Anything else to look for?
Does this sound like a good deal for 25k? It is literally in showroom condition. He used to to pull an 8k camper around a little bit and not too much use other than the occasional drive empty
$1500 to bullet proof? I would say more like $3k by the time it's all said and done, I think that's close to what I spent doing mine. But I didn't do the head gaskets. I replaced head bolts for ARP's one at a time. Upgraded stand pipes &dummy plugs, STC fitting was already done, replaced 1 injector which tested good but the orings and crush washer were gone, new orings and washers on all injectors, new oil cooler, new ipr screen (will need after an oil cooler change) new gaskets for top end, coolant filter, blue spring, welded up the egr cooler with freeze plugs, SCT programmer atleast to turn off the EGR valve so it won't throw a code, all new filters and fluids, and probably most important, a fuel pressure guage (just recently saved my injectors when my HFCM was failing). All work was done by myself in my driveway. But I had to buy several tools and lots of beer cause it was August when I was doing mine and the truck is too big to fit in my garage.
It was another time my wife was rite about a project. She says every time I estimate a project she doubles it, and that may be enough.
I don't want to talk you out of it. Cause yes it is a great engine. And way easier to work on than my neighbors 6.4. Especially for shade tree mechanics.
1 Get a ScanGaugeII and program in the x-gauges. Take it on test drive and monitor as much as possible.
2 Get a Ford warranty report. This will show all work done under warranty.
.
ok thanks for the info capt, good to know.
I would definitely get the scanner before i went but i am going on monday to look at the truck..
I just talked to the guy and he said that he has never had a single problem with it at all. i will probably call ford with the vin to get that info on monday.
He said that all he has really used the truck for is to go camping during the 4 month nice warm season we have around here. he pulls an 8000 pound camper all over new england, it is a conventional pull camper. and then it sits almost all the rest of the year without too much use. which i feel is really good to avoid the salt and also because i have heard many people say that most 6.0s have problems from lack of maintenance and babying them without working them
50k is not a lot of miles for an 06, but I am sure you know that. I also think this platform this the best out there( 2005+ super duty crew cab short bed ).
I have been reading here for about two years now, and this is what I noticed. Most of these trucks will need the FICM repair done at some point. If I was buying this truck that would be the first thing I would do. The next thing I would do is the blue spring upgrade. Being that it is an 06, the upgraded STC fitting will also need installed, along with stand plugs and dummy plugs. Another failure on these engines is the EGR and oil coolers. This is why you need to watch EOT and ECT at all times. I am sure you have read about the head gasket failures, but with NO tuner and 50k miles and no evidence of bad head gaskets they should be fine.
I think those are the major items, you can research the cost, $1500 may cover it if you are doing the work yourself.
I really hope I am not scaring you out of this truck because they really are great trucks.
What exactly do i look for and monitor when i have one of those hooked up?
There are other options besides the Scangauge2. Some people use there cell phone, I can't help you there, sorry.
With the Scangauge2 you will have to program in the X-gauges.
You can look at temps, pressures, and volts. Most common are the coolant temp ECT, the oil temp EOT, batt volts FICM volts Injection control pressure ICP, Injection pressure regulator IPR, and so on.

I just want you to be as informed as possible

That is good to know also, I was thinking the EGR delete or bulletproof egr should be first but I can see why the FICM should be done first. I was thinking about just getting one from bulletproof diesel.*

Is the warranty report the same thing as an oasis report? If so, where do I get it done? Im pretty sure I have the vin somewhere
EGR cooler uses engine coolant to cool exhaust gasses that can reach 1200 deg. The coolant temps under normal conditions run about 190 deg. The oil cooler can start to plug up and starve the EGR cooler of coolant. In my opinion this is why they fail, sending coolant through the intake and into combustion chamber. This failure can be catastrophic. So Bulletproof EGR cooler, or EGR delete is a good idea. You can monitor coolant and oil temps with a Scangauge2. This will give you an idea of how the oil cooler is performing.
As far as I know the warranty is the oasis report. When I was searching for a truck I requested one from the Ford dealer where the truck was for sale, and they printed one. You may need to have the owner get one for you.
Also a good idea is to search this forum. See what others say. There are some very knowledgeable people on here. After your test drive post your findings and questions.
