Help me diagnose a problem

When turning right, either sharply or just during a long gradual turn in the road, I hear a grinding or running sound consistent with RPM coming from the rear - I think the right rear. It driving flat, no sound. If turning left, no sound. To me, it seems if the right rear is unloaded a bit weight wise, the sound occurs.

I'm thinking wheel bearing but I wonder if anyone has heard something similar. Hoping not differential, but it really does seem to come from right rear not center of rear. Only if turning right and moving weight to left side.

Any ideas?

You can't tell from the drivers seat where the noise is coming from but it's not the rear end. You can attach a tape recorder to each side or have someone hang out the back door and listen..............somebody you don't like, lol.

Lots of times you will get noises just like you mention from either A. rusty backing plates starting to rub on rotors/drums. B. rocks/dirt doing the same rubbing.

The rear hubs are oil filled, they get their oil from the rear differential.

Not sure how I didn't remember that after going through a differential and axle rebuild on my previous truck (Titan). Thanks for the slap to the head!

hopefully I don't need to go down the path of replacing the hub bearings and bearing races - remind me too much of that last truck.

Did you jack up the noisy side and turn the wheel by hand? Try to duplicate that sound. Then remove the tire, caliper, rotor to see if anything looks or sounds odd while you inspect the e-brakes.

Might be your Ebrake junk falling apart inside of the rear rotors. The disc/drum brake system vehicle manufactures are using now days is crap. If the vehicle is an automatic I pull all the ebrake junk out and leave it out. It causes nothing but problems.

I wouldn't recommend that, about 5 years ago I had a brake line go and I really enjoyed having that brake to stop me. Nothing like rounding a corner at 70 to see brake lights and having no brakes to make you crap your pants and thank god the parking brake works and you were leaving lots of space in front of you.

You should be inspecting and replacing rusty brake lines so you don't have that trouble.

And even if you do blow a line you still have the other half of your brakes, you just have to push the peddle to the floor to use them.

Ebrakes are just a hassle in auto trans vehicles.
