I have a 2000 ford f150 4x4 with a 5.4 in it. It’s also an extra cab. I replaced the front pad with raybestos ceramic pads (75 bones). The front brakes started to make a grind or moan sound when they are applied. It will only do it if I put the pedal on hard. If I slow down easily I almost never get it. It was doing this before the pads were installed. On the left passenger side I noticed that the outside pad was worn more than the inside pad. Any suggestion would be appreciated. This is my first time with the brakes on this model truck. The pads went on easy. I may need to lube something up on the caliper.
Severe Duty pads are always louder than the softer pads. It sounds like you need to take alook at your rotors and see if you need to turn them. Also try giving your pads a layer of no squeel. It comes in an orange tube.
thx for the post. the squeal stuff you talk about.....does it go right on the face of the pad? i bought the ceramic because they were not supposed to squeal? thoughts?
no it goes on the back against the plunger and the caliper. NOT AGINST THE ROTER. Nothing will happen, just burn off. Ceramic pads are hezvy duty, they will squeel. I had heavy duty pads on my 260Z and boy howdy they were loud. I switched them back out for organic whenever I wasn't racing to queit the ride down.
thx for the info. i find it ironic that your a Z fan as well. i dont have a Z but i do have a datsun 1600 roadster (1967). my dad had a 260 for 20 years until we were sent over seas (army). i wanted that car bad!
I don't have any thoughts on the brakes, but I also am a Z fan. I finally got my 78Z restored, then got an offer that I couldnt refuse and sold it a couple of years ago. Sure wish that I had it back.
well i went over the brakes again today. i greased the pins and the caliper pluger faces. put it all back together and still get the same noise. i really think it is the pads. i looked the old ones over and they do not look ceramic. the rotors look smooth and not warped as far as i can tell. the truck brakes even as well. no pulling that i can tell.
i may have spoke too soon. i took it for an extended drive hitting hte brakes all he way. it made the noise one time on the start but after that it made not noise at all. i was impressed at how much better stopping power i have now. i will know for sure tomorrow on the way to work. thx for the help.
I have a 2001 which apparently needs new front pads. I'm getting what seems like wear sensor noise (Do Fords have wear sensors now?). It has 50,000 miles so that's not too bad. I have been told that the OEM pads are ceramic. Do you guys think I'm being "sold" on the ceramics or is this possibly true? I do have the 4 wheel discs.
Also, I don't think I would mind some noise, but the "boy howdy loud" doesn't sound too good. Does that mean I can't sneak in late at night?
well i have an update on the pads. they are raybestos ceramic pads and cost me 75.00. yesterday i pulled the brakes and lubed all the pins and plunger faces. the truck stops great however i get a loud moaning noise when i stop. sometimes it chatters a little. almost like the pad is skipping or something. im sure it is the pads however i noticed that the truck would make the same noise about two weeks before i pulled the old pads that were worn. the noise is alot worse now. suggestions?
Ironic that xcopterdoc (would like to know the story behind the name) would ask about the rotors. I was just over at checker talking to the guys. I have not too much experience when it comes to rotors. They asked me if I had turned them and I replied "they looked nice and smooth"......well they laughed a little and explained to me that smooth is not what you wanted. I always thought that resurfacing was done to smooth all the roughness off of them. So I will be pulling my rotors tomorrow and get them done. I will let you guys know how it goes. Turns out the rotors are roughened up. I asked if the pads were shot now and he said probably not because it has been less than a week and I have not done much driving on them. He did say to take some sand paper and give the surface of the pads a little scuff.
