Cat & hubby ( or is it mud man) think twice before switching the rear axel you may need the lower gear to get out of the normal snow fall up there
Trust me a Dana 44 behind that 3 speed HD still has plenty of low end torque. Ask my neighbors how I know. Now if you put in a newer Explorer axle you may lose something. Of course you yoopers get snow earlier and later than we do in the "lower 48", lol Maybe you need chains too. The coldest winter I ever spent was one June night in Iron Mountain. lol
I don't really plan on taking long trips, and, as DW and teardropty understand, going over 50 isn't a huge requirement where I live! Chains may not be a bad idea. It's still winter up here, regardless that the calendar says it's spring! It was snowing today while I was grilling brats, and there's still a foot or so left of snow on the ground.
Cat, teardrop is probably right the Dana 44 would give you better overall drive ability and most likely better gas mileage Either way it looks like a great project
welcome cat and onterage'.....remember, we love pictures, pictures, pictures! that cab looks great, i'm quite jealous. everybody here has helped me immensely and i'm sure they will do the same for you. this is a great place to learn and have fun at the same time.

If you already have a Dana 60, you may want to keep it there until you get the truck back on the road. You can always replace the ring & pinion gears later for a higher ratio. I'm assuming that there are 8 lug wheels under those hubcaps. The popular swap for an F2 or F250 is to get a more modern Dana 60 from a newer 70's F250. That swap keeps the wheel bolt patterns the same on the front and back wheels. It sounds like someone may have already done an update for you.
Thanks, Dan. My husband and i were just discussing replacing the ring and pinion at a later date. I am thinking that once we get her on the road for the summer with a flatbed on there, we'll be able to get a feel for how she rides and make a decision after that as to whether we swap out the D60 or do the ring and pinion.

That's perfect. There is no telling how many times it's been said to get it safe, then drive it and the truck will tell you what she needs.
