ye sthe clip can be swapped as a complete unit. is it just a bolt on, no it is not. some of the wiring is different, and a couple of the mounting points are a little different. but it can be done, and it isnt a real bad swap. looks better too.
If memory serves, I think you'll need: radiator support, hood, cowl, fenders, bumper, and grill & headlights. Still, not a bad way to go when you can update the look of your truck by 6 years!
Do you think that the swap would work if you wanted to go backwards? I.E. when I "restore" my '89 f-150 could I put an 80-86 front end on it or is the wiring too different for this application?

I don't see any reason it wouldn't work, since you can convert the clip of an '80 - '86 model over to the '96 just as you can with the '90, as discussed above. The wiring issue mainly pertains to the headlamps and front signal markers, so it should be easy enough to splice / swap bulb sockets. The only thing you may want to consider is the rear quarter panels..... the '87 through '96 trucks all use a small flare over the wheel openings (on the rear quarters and front fenders) that is different from the boxier body lines that flow along the lower rockers and over the wheel openings of the '80 - '86's. If you swapped the front clip, alone, and did not change the rear quarters, your truck may look sort of funny with the different lines between the front fenders and rear quarters.
