The oil filter cap also needs to be replaced on that truck with an OEM cap and filter.
Like others have mentioned, check for the updated HPOP fitting.
Well... i started to loosen the bolts holding the uppies to manifold per the procedure in the tech pages... but discovered the bellows allowed me to move collector just far enough to yank it out.
Updated hpop fitting?
Where? I dunnot think this truck has really been worked on this deep.
Hpop area has a rusty colored middle dodad with the ipr screwed into it... and some kind of aluminum skirt around it. I honestly thought that was where the oil cooler lived until i got a closer look at the picture.
Yesterday... had it down to bare valley. It went much smoother than i expected.
Now for putting the intake manifold back in... should i wait to put the gaskets between there until i have it pretty much in position? Seemed like the way i had to fanangle it out of there the new gasket might get chewed up.
And for the finale... vc's gotta come off because its STILL freakin hydrolocked. (Or broken from the owner trying to crank it andmechanically siezed. Any tidbits to make that task go faster?
Recommended way to clear a hydrolock is to pull the glow plugs and spin it over. Lots of pressure, be safe and stand clear. They are below the v/c so it saves some tear down. It is common to bugger up the GP harness getting them unplugged though.
Updated fitting goes directly on the pump. With the IPR removed, pull that aluminum skirt/cover off and it's right there. If the fitting has been updated already the tube part won't have a plastic piece in the middle.
So the gp connectors are the ones just underneath the vc's... and i had to unplug one of them to get the intake manifold off? It had 4 very small pins in the connection...
Again...
This is the first 6.0 i have been in. Fortunately the owner isnt in to bad of a bind for the truck while i need the extra couple of days to defeat the learning curve...
Which i probably couldnt do without FTE...

Yes, the HPOP is in the back. There is an aluminum cover and the IPR screws into the pump. The old STC fitting can blow out and destroy the rear cover not to mention leaving the driver stranded. It does not take long to pull the cover and check for it once you are this far in. You would be doing your buddy a favor. There is an update kit from Ford that replaces it with a once piece fitting.
I will be this truck's mechanic for as long as this fellow owns his truck...
He really cant afford any further optional parts right now, but i will mention it and maybe we can attack it next time i have the truck in for work.
You guys be the judge... im getting 550$ total for labor on this whole deal...
Would you take your truck anywhere else? Lol...
Im thinking if i tackle another 6.0 in the future i WILL push pretty hard to do the fitting uptate before we even order parts. Thanks for the recommendation and rest assured i will address it.
Yes, that fitting is a very common failure point and when it does go its very bad news. The kit is extremely cheap and at 88,000 miles mine was failing.
Finally done with this damn thing.
He had already lost his hpop before and it was updated then...
Also had ficm and 1 stick replaced...
Truckis at 149k miles.
He had been running straight garden hose water.
Did still have engine light on...
Checked and there were no codes.
Only thing i could get to pop was on gem/vcm diagnostics... transfer case faults...
This wasnt on any vato zone scanner... dunno if that matters with you guys so much like with us down one more section... but i had a brand new solus on it... and im in freakin love!
