My truck has the factory hitch receiver with an adapter so it can except a standard 2" ball mount. This adapter creates a very uncomforting sound while towing a small boat. Does anyone else experience this noise and what is best way to handle it, without replacing the ball mount?

OK, maybe but every time I go over a bump it sounds like the trailer just disconnected from my truck. I guess I'm just paranoid but I'm thinking about getting a 2-1/2" ball mount.
Mine did the same thing! I just tack welded it! Just a small weld will hold it! I was scared of losing the insert! If it needs to be removed just grind off the weld and you're good to go.
have never heard the noise and have been towing since day one. i have always thrown around the idea tho of tack welding the think in there so i dont lose it as stated above. just havent done so due to the fact i have a hitch in there that never comes out probably 10 months out of the year.

You say small boat and that's the issue there. If the trailer is light on the tongue, it will make a hell of a racket from the hitch. I had a 7k car trailer that I bought for my F150, which it worked fine empty or loaded. When I went to a 1 ton, the trailer would jar and bounce all over in the hitch, just because it was light in front unless loaded, and would not compress the truck springs whatsoever. I always ran the WDH hooked up light with the trailer empty on the 1 ton, just to keep a little preload on the itch and keep it quiet. I realize that the WDH isn't reall an option on most boat trailers, but I know that noise, and it is miserable.
I have found it very difficult to find a 2 1/2" hitch. I haven't looked in over a year, so that may have changed since the receiver is more common now.
Someone recently mentioned wrapping the sleeve with duct tape to tighten it up. Should help for a little while, then just re-do it.

The problem here is you loose the grounding capabilities when you place an insulator (duct tape) between the sleeve and the receiver opening. I like Savages' fix, assuming it doesn't cause the same issue I already mentioned. I choose to use the rust method. I've been meaning to tac weld it, but, haven't got there yet.

Didn't think about that.
Still like the idea of a 2.5" hitch. Has anyone found any?

Tongue weight is little or nothing. If it had more weight on the tongue it wouldn't make any noise at all. Guess I need a heavier boat.

I have seen them here in town at the local trailer sales place. I'm just too cheap to shell out bucks to replace all my ball mounts. I would think Google would yield some results.

Oh yes, they have them now but at $100 or more I'll make due with what I have. I'm gonna try to move the boat forward a little to put more weight on the tongue. Boat is a 16' jon boat so not much weight to shift.
Ya I could never figure out why theres so much slop in these hitches, adapters, drops, in my case just the slide in drop and/or lock pin. Is the design suppose to have slop in it? I have a 12" drop on mine, an man it starts to amplify what ur haulin. Cant they design it with a tighter tolerance? Be nice if someone with some kinda engineering experience or senior user can answer this or offer some info.
