I'm back again with another issue on this truck. 96 F350 4x4 7.3L
I drove the truck last week. I pulled it around the shop, and it started running very rough. I shut it down. Let is sit for a minute. Start it back up, and all was well. Took it for a drive. Included a shut down at destination, and then back.
Yesterday, I go to take the truck out, and it wont start. I find that if I give it a little throttle, I can get it to run, albeit, rough. Once it has been running for a couple minutes, it will idle without my foot on the throttle. (still rough idle/clatter)
I had a new Crank Position Sensor, so I installed it. No change.
I ran a couple tests with my craftsman scanner and it shot back these codes.
p0236 Turbo Boost Sensor A Circuit Performance
p0279 Injector Circuit Low - Cylinder 7
p0476 exhaust pressrue control valve range
p0605 Exhaust Pressure Control Valve Performance
Are any of these my problem? If so, where do I start, and what are these things?!
I would start by checking the valve cover gasket pins for burned up pins, along with both the undercover harness, and the external plugs to the gasket. A burned plug can cause the IDM to shut down one bank to prevent harm to itself.
Yikes. Yes, that is what you do. Take the oil fill cap off and smell inside too, see if you smell burnt plastic. You may have problems under the vc's too.
Valve cover is off, and looks worse inside. Good thing an international dealer is two miles from my shop! (and open until 11pm?)
The IH emporium near us is open all night, except weekends. Often cheaper than the Ford dealer. Good call, too; I've heard some stories about the Dormans.
B-b-but it says right there on the plug, "reusable gasket"......
I got the gasket, and the inner mini harness for the injector and glow plug installed.. Don't you know I forgot the pig tail! It's okay, I'm going to head home and stop in on the way. Got that gasket and valve cover back on. Tomorrow I'll solder in the new plug and see if I've found the cure.
Would have been a good idea to ohm the plugs while I had it apart, wouldn't it.. Oh well. I haven't had much trouble with cold starts, so I'll hope for the best.
Might should have checked the GPs while you had the VCs off. Usually bad GPs is what causes the harness and plugs to burn like that. The two outside pins go to the GPs, see how they are burnt worse than the others.
