Just got back from job searching the valley in phoenix and have a really bad clacking valve. I pulled the cover and yep the rocker arm is loose only on one valve. Can I just tighten this rocker down ? Its a 1966 f-100 as far as engine size I am still unsure 300 or 4.9 six cylinder. I am aware they are the same engine just different bore and stroke, so I have read. I really cant afford to tear this thing down to the block right now. I hope there is something I can do fairly easy to get by for a while until I can get some cash to do it right. Thanks to the economy and the big wig politicians my wife and I have lost most of our income and are nearing the end of our resources. Can anyone give me some good news or advice on what is the best fix if any? Thanks for reading my thread.
I have no seat time on a I6 but assume the rocker is like a 289/302 and to set lash you tighten until it quiets. This is done at normal operating temperature.
I would first insure the lifter is pumping up as it should. If it bleeds down too easy, or is bottomed out. The attempt to set lash is likely to hurt before helping.
Thanks for responding redmanbob. Not sure what type of rocker it is or how to check the lifter condition. I will do some researching to find out how though. Thanks again for your reply.
I'm wondering if you didn't get a little crap/dirt in the lifter or oil passage. I would try a bottle of 'Rislone engine treatment'. It does a pretty good job of loosening up gunk. It sometimes works pretty fast. Worth a try. Or replace the lifter. How many miles on the motor? Regular oil changes?
I prefer not to put sludge solutions in my engine as the grime eventually makes it's way to the bearings. Oil filter bypass may get actuated at some point and walla, your engine is worse.
