At minus 30 15W40 would have the consistency of peanut butter ok maybe not that bad but even at 30 degrees the difference between 15W40 and 5W40 is huge. 10W30 is also an option.
Ok new ficm was put in at dealer truck still runs ruff when cold started but does start now. He says injectors are still showing bad. I did ask him about running cleaning additives if they would fix the injectors and was told that that was nonsense. ??
It would be worth your while to run your truck down to the local autozone and have them pull the codes so you can make an informed decision, one bad injector is enough to make it run bad. Did the dealer check your fuel pressure? If not I would for sure have them do that.
All I am seeing, from your original post, truck starts hard cold. OK first check, batteries, Glow Plug Relay Module, then look at the FICM. What codes if any are or were showing? How does the engine perform at operating temperature? Black smoke is over fueling, things to check as mentioned is fuel pressure.
Diagnostics by wallet is expensive, $250 for a dealer to tell me what is wrong is better than $1,000 in parts I do not need. I would strongly suggest, find another dealer.
Part of checking your batteries is verifying all grounds...
Especially the main ground that goes from your battery to your block to your frame.
Mine was broken completely on the frame connection
That combined with other problems can make cold starting even harder
not going to fix your problem but may help
Ok here is were I am at now. After all the work at the dealer truck still ran poorly when cold, still idled ruff even when warm at stop signs, it did cold start a little better. Yesterday I changed the oil at a different ford dealer had them put in 5w 40w full synthetic and put in two quarts of Hot Shots Secret oil additive expensive at $25.00 a quart but cheaper than injectors . I filled the fuel tank and added injector cleaner. Only 100 miles later the truck idled smooth a silk at stop signs and accelerated smother and this morning at 10 deg f started right up and no black smoke. I don't know if this is a temporary fix or if things will keep getting better. I do know I did not spend $3500.00 on all new injectors. Thanks Jay
