Please help me identify my engine!

I recently picked up a 74 f350 super camper special and am now rebuilding the motor, but i cant figure out the size engine is in it, i do know it is the original to the truck, a few friends have told me they think it's a 390 but i would like to know for sure before i buy new cams for it and end up with the wrong ones, does anyone know any way to determine the size?

Looks like the intakes under the valve cover. More than likely its a 360 FE. Only way to tell if its a 390 FE is to measure the stroke.

its an FE, there should be a block casting # on the right side under the head and behind the alternator. there is also one down by the oil pump. or you can attempt to measure the stroke of a cylinder while a spark plug is out. there is no other way as all FE blocks look essentially the same.

If you have 5 valve cover bolts it is some type of FE. My guess is its either a 360 or a 390.

Ok well to measure the stroke make sure a piston is at the bottom of the cylinder and measure from the piston to the to the top of the block. That will give us a number that we can tell you what motor it is. Also you should measure the bore, just put a tape measure across the tho cylinder bore and give us then number.

then crank the engine over by hand and measure how far up and down the piston slides. google is your friend. i think a 390 has ~3.75" stroke and a 360 is ~3.5". its all on the web, really easy to find.

Actually a 390 has a bore of 4.05 inches and stroke of 3.785 inches and the 360 has the bore of a 390 4.05 inches and used the 352s bore of 3.5 inches.
