Hi all, It has been a long time since I needed some advise on what to do? When i have a problem with my truck this site is the best and I always make my mind up with what to do with all your help, So this is my thoughts. I love my 2004 6.0 it has been great to me and my family. I have built it up to a great truck. Donahoe Racing 4.5 Spring hanger kit,35" tires,Dynatrac Free Spin KIT and Winch.I have used it well on the trails and the only part on the truck that does not have a dent is the hood,(those jeep trails can get tight) Since the truck is my family DD, It's gone from trail rig to tow rig. Now I just pull a jeep on a trailer. The truck is just a treat to drive with the load, But my two boy's are getting bigger and the ext cab is a little to small. Just think it is time to step up to a crew cab the truck has only 88000 miles on it and is paid for. I have gone back and forth on what crew cab to get. The new F-150, but will have to order new just to get the HD payload and at $43000 that's a lot of $$$ Then there is the new f-250 with 6.2 or 6.7 and the cost is just out of hand for the new trucks. Now I did find a 2002 f -250 xlt 4x4 crew cab7.3 with 104000 miles and the price is just under $23000 do you think i should buy? and is that a good price? The other thing is the dealer only offerd me $5000 for my truck. I know it has all those body dents but that just seems to low. WHAT do you think? thanks
Well from a guy that went through a buy back on n 04 supercab 350 6.0 I will give you my advice. I loved my 04 but it had issues so in 05 it was bought back and the truck I chose was a F-150 larait super cab as well, I tow a 86 Buick GN to the races, so I would say our towing needs are the same...that truck didnt have enough power for me, and fuel mileage sucked with the 5.4...I know things have changed there.
However I didnt have that truck long and bought my current 06 SD with a 6.0 and I havent been happier, We bought a 5er lat year its 36.5' and weighs in arounf 13k and my truck tows great...sometimes I wish I had a dually but for the amout I tow it does great and I just slow down.
My advice is that 02 is too much money for the mileage, unless its MINT MINT, the 7.3 guys will say its the greatest truck ever, and they are great, but I would think that you could pic up another 04-07 6.0 truck for less money and you already know the ins an outs, just get an OAISIS report and see if its been a problem child, if it has walk away. Like I said you are already familiar with the power train. And everyone thinks the 6.0 is a pos so why not jump on a good used 1 for a good price.
Thanks for the advice. Since I have been looking at trucks it seems the seller's don't care if it has a 6.0 they are still more than the 2002 but not buy much. and i think the ones with the 7.3 think hey can ask for more do to the bad rep the 6.0 got. that 2002 looks good what is s fair price
"Fair" Price is what your area would support. With diesel fuel being as high as it is there is no way I would spend 23k on a 11 year old truck with that many miles.
If thats waht it came down to, for me anyway, I would take my truck and a few bucks and put a down payment on a new 1.
Dealer offers are almost always horrible. I've never traded in a vehicle in my 55 yrs. I always price a trade, but it's always a fraction of what I get for it when I sell it myself. The last one was my 99 Dodge that they offered me $1200 for. I ended up selling it for $4500. If you'll notice, the first question the saleman will ask is "Are you going to trade your Oscar Mayer Weinermobile?" or whatever you may be driving at the time. Tell them "No", even if you plan to. The price will get discounted quickly, then after you get a firm price, throw the trade option on the table. You will then find out the true amt. they will offer.
x1000 for selling your truck private party. It may take longer than trading it in on the lot, but you'll likely get closer to what you want/what its worth than by taking it to the dealership.
As far as your hunt for a new truck goes, don't be afraid to shop outside your normal market. I'm currently hunting for a crew cab dually, while also selling my crew cab short bed. I search everywhere as far east as Saint Louis, south to Texas, west to Utah, and north to Montana/Idaho. For the right truck, I'm willing to drive/fly that far to pick it up.
Crew cabs are going for 7-12k here in the Colorado area, with 7.3s and around 190-250k miles. Just to give you an idea of what another market might yield.
Well I live in Wisconsin and that 2002 was just across the line into IL's But the truck is from AR? After thinking about it the back seat of the crew cab has no head rest and that is not good. don't like to see my boy's or anyone with there heads above the seat and that close to the glass. That alone is a deal breaker. sine that's going on in my ext cab. When my boy's were in car seats did not even think about it. I look for trucks on auto trader, is there a better way. I used to just buy new but things a different now and the price of new MAN O MAN
