Black Vinyl

Looking for recommendations for a product to keep all the black vinyl trim looking good and to restore some that is already on the gray side.

For the stuff that is already faded you can use a heat gun to bring it back to the original black.

Something about the heat and the chemicals in the plastic. I am not sure how it works but an old body shop guy told me to give it a try on a set of plastic bedcaps I was going to throw out and it definitely does work. Just gotta get them good and hot, like don't touch them or you might leave your finger print on it hot.

Probably a dumb question, but how does it work on the rubber around the windows??

I would be afraid that stuff would melt. It seems too fragile. There's a guy on eBay selling those end pieces alone now and the heat gun would work on the cowl panels. Could buy end pieces for $20 a pair and bring the color back to cowls instead of paying about $70 each for new cowl pieces.

I tried the Back to Black. I guess mine is too far gone for that. Probably need a dye. I am afraid the heat gun would distort or shrink the cowl piece. I guess I will look for a dye locally.

Try Solution Finish from Autogeeks.net. It is a dye type of refinisher, says professional use only, but it will get it back to black.

I gave you a link to a good quality dye. Have used it myself multiple times on multiple vehicles and it works great.

I'm going for the showroom new brand that 02transam posted. Here's a link to their site. Care Care Products, Car Dye, Car Treatment, Car Restoration

I'm gonna have to buy some and try it out on my Lightning. I have a ton of faded plastic on my poor L that is no longer black, but a blanched grey looking color.
