The Ecoboost is overrated unless you are a full-time tower and in which, you should just go with the 250.
I had a 2010 (same everything) and was curious if I screwed up and missed out on this beloved EcoBoost. So this time, I test drove several. Up hills, down the highway, through the city, gravel, pavement, etc... the 5.0 has tons more "umph"!! The get up and go is insane. I test drove two different ecoboosts and they felt sluggish. Like the engine had to think twice before gunning it. Yes, I have a lead foot - I want to be in front ... haha ... and I need power. I tow 2-3x a year.
And when they ask you why you are buying the truck you are bought - my first response was noise. I don't care for a quiet truck... even with the 5.0, about two minutes after buying it (okay, 4 days), I upgraded to dual exhaust and much more noise.
I really love my 5.0 as well. I have towed my travel trailer (~7000 lbs large frontal area- pic in my garage) to FL from MI twice and have nothing but praise for the 5.0. I pulled the same trailer before with a 2001 F250 5.4, 4:10 gears and the 5.0 is better at towing in every way; off the line, getting to speed, holding highway speed, up hill and down.
Gas mileage is the same when towing but a full 5mpg better in everyday driving. (F250 weighed 460 lbs more. I weighed them both).
The ecoboost is a fine engine but those who write off the 5.0 as not good for towing are overlooking a great, capable engine.
Never drove the Ecoboost but I can tell you I've only had my 5.0 for 5 months and it has been through the ringer.
6k miles from Alaska to Florida hauling 1700 in the bed/cab.
800 miles towing 2.5k lbs. Didn't really know it was back there.
1k miles towing a Camaro on a full trailer. About 5k lbs. Definitely felt that one...
13k miles in 5 months and love it. I'd also say that even for a stock V8, it sounds pretty good.
Took a 600 mile round trip today from central Missouri down through the Ozark hills/mountains to Jonesborough, Arkansas and back to pick up a truck my son bought on Ebay. Going down I just had my 18' flatbed car hauler that weighs in at about 2000 lbs. Got 18.1 mpg calculated with a heavy cross wind. Pulled all the way in 6th gear. On the way back with the Ranger loaded aboard I got 14.2 bucking a strong head wind. The trailer loaded was 5400 lbs. I locked out 6th gear and it towed in 5th even through the hills. It was awesome. There were a lot of slow/passing lanes on the hills for slower traffic that I thought I may need to use but never needed to with all the reserve power. It never got above 2500 rpm's even on the longest steepest grades. Just set the cruise at 66 and it chugged along at 1800 rpm's. Many folks were staring in disbelief as I blew by them up hill. I have an EcoBoost 2WD with 3.15 gears by the way. If it was set up with gears for towing I can't imagine what this thing could do.
