Possible EGR problem

I have a '96 Bronco with a 302. Several months back the check engine light came on. I had the codes pulled and it indicated a bad egr valve. I replaced the valve and reset the computer and after driving a while the light came back on...once again the code was for bad egr valve.

Symptoms are it seems very doggy though it pulls my 5000lb boat without a lot of trouble. While at parking lot speeds or while giving it a very little bit of throttle the engine runs really rough and surges. It runs fine at idle or with larger throttle inputs. Several times now while trying to back up...whether backing the boat...or backing up an incline where there is a load on the engine...the engine would just bog completely down. I could floor the accelerator and the truck wouldnt even move. When I let off the accelerator the engine would die. After restarting it I could back up just fine.

I noticed today that I couldnt even spin the tires from a dead stop in water...not that thats a big accompishment...just seems that it must be way down on power.

I should also mention that when putting on the new egr valve I managed to cross thread the fitting so now its cross threaded but since the fitting is aluminum it cut new threads. Point being it may have a very very slight leak. Is this a problem and if so...is there an easy way to fix it without buying a new exhaust gas tube?
