Carb?? Emissions?? or?? Help Needed!

I'm semi-stumped- My mechanic says re-build the carb...but I'm not convinced. Rig is 1986 E350 ClubWagon 460 Engine, Holley 4180C Carb (or Motorcraft p/n equiv). Symptoms manifest themselves in the following manner:
99.5% of the time this occurs when the rig has been driven for awhile and is up to full temperature... Does not do it every day. Symptoms occur with both tanks. Does it whether tank is full or empty. Carb has been adjusted, new needle and seat, fuel filters new.

When putting along with very little gas flow , on urban streets- begins by slight roughness to idle barely nticeable but I'm getting better at predicting the next.. Starts faltering and then get exhaust Backfires (may die by itself after this )-Put in Neutral Turn off engine and restarts immediately just fine-runs usually fine for a while or for the rest of day without troubles-Intermittent. exhaust smells rich...

When decelerating from highway speeds-starts faltering and backfires, diesels, then stops running- (or sounds like spillover, percolation). exhaust smells very rich! Does not do this every time - Intermittent.

More rare- Accelerating to highway speeds, falters and dies. Almost like electrical failure or full fuel blockage.

Most rare but what throws me- Standing at stop light just shuts off-no falter- no sputter-more like electrical.

I have checked all Emission hoses to make sure the are connected properly- Thought at first it might be Ported Vacuum Switch for EGR port?
Mostly feels like there is a abrupt timing problem or fuel block. But the stop light bit gives me the mental trouble....Any Help is appreciated here or by direct email...Thanx

Carb?? Emissions?? or?? Help Needed!

Thank Goodness for at least one hot day in Seattle per year. Was up to 88 deg F outside today and my problem became less intermittent and much easier to troubleshoot-Was the ignition module-got a new one for $20 and problem is solved. Seem this is a common problem because of the extreme heat under the hood of the E350 Van with the 460. Anybody have any ideas for keeping this thing a little cooler? Thanx, Paul

ON my 300-6, I moved it to the fire wall with a heat sink from a 92 and up ford truck. I cut and lenthened the wires myself. I have heard that someone manufactures a extention cable to do this without cutting and splicing. The IGnition modual just gets too hot on the distributer.
