Wondering what you guys have found to work best for your 400, as far as diameter, mufflers and length.
As of right now I'm think dual 3" maybe 2 1/2 back to some magnaflow 18" mufflers than dumping it right behind rear axe. Not looking for noise, just nice tone cruising and able to let people know I'm there when I stand on it. More interested in torque over rpm. Truck ( by the way it's in a 77 "highboy" with c6 np203 ) mainly used to pull car trailer and cruising.
The motor is mainly stock. I have a weiand intake edelbrock 600 cfm, hedman long tube headers 89360, and a straight up timing set. Absolutely no emission control.
Any advice would be great. Thanks
Dual 3-inch tubing is fine if your rig is a 500 HP monster that lives above 5,000 RPM all day long. Duals for the street on these trucks (and your use) should be no larger than a 2.5-inch dual system.
BUT, you can do a "step up" system where the two 2.5-inch tubes merge into a single 3-inch tube and exit through a 3-inch muffler.
I just had a custom built 2 1/2" aluminized Y-Pipe installed that connects into a 3" aluminized single exhaust pipe run thru a Flowmaster stainless muffler and exits out behind the passenger wheel. it is very throaty while shifting thru the gears but quiets down at cruising speeds. I'm happy with the tone and have had many compliments on the way it sounds.
I've got dual 2" diameter straight pipes. She cackles and roars like a sum-b***h. This is the set up the truck had when I bought it. I will re-do the exhaust system when I rebuild my 400. My best advice is to search YouTube. I like the sound of chambered mufflers (like Flowmasters) on these old carburated V8 trucks. On EFI engines I would go for a packed muffler (like Magnaflow). If it was me, I would run dual 2" or 2.5" (depending on my engine specs) into an H-pipe (H-pipes provide better low end power while X-pipes provide better top end) then after the x-pipe i would run through 2 chambered mufflers and 45' it out the back finished with some nice 3.5" stainless steel tips (silverlines of course)
Torque wise your gonna do best with a dual 2 1/4 system or a 2.5 single. 3 inch is to much you'll loose bottom end. 2 inch is gonna choke it down. Also H and X pipes do nothing for performace other then change the tone. Only time you would see any gain with either is the X directly on the collecter. Due to obstructions (transmission) it's impossible.
I've got a 2 1/4 duals to glasspacks exiting out behind the wheel well to 3 inch tips at a 45 degree angle. Idles nice quiet in the cab with a nice rumble cruise is quiet with no drone then when I hit the loud pedal it opens up and screams.
