According to the Scheduled Maintenance Guide that came with my Ford F350 7.3L Diesel:
"Rear axles and power take off (PTO) units containing synthetic lubricant and light duty trucks equipped with Ford-design axles are lubricated for life. These lubricants are not to be checked or changed unless a leak is suspected, service is required or the axle assembly has been submerged in water"

I went with the 08 aluminum cover after reading for a week on extra capacity, drain plugs and dip sticks. Just couldn't justify the price for something I would only touch every 5 years or so. Painted the aluminum cover a nice color and putting it on this week. Painted the Dana 50 to match up front.

So I gotta ask whats the advantage of the '08 aluminum diff cover?? Does the aluminum keep it cooler? Drain/fill plugs?

It has cooling fins on it, it is lighter than the steel one, it won't rust, and as mentioned above it is low cost.

Plus being cast aluminum much stiffer and less chance of leaking.
But I went for the cooler look.
Really no need to ever check level, if it leaks you will know it.

Yeah, no rust! My original got hit by something and had a slight leak at the bottom. I could have taken it off, straitened it, and reused it but I already ordered and had the aluminum one. My original cover went on our 94.5 IDI 7.3 work truck.

An FYI painting aluminum reduces its cooling ability. It puts a barrier between the metal and air.

Can you say whether the Al cover is anozided? I'd guess that it is and if so shouldn't need paint for corrosion protection either.

Ford Rear Differential Cover 12-10.25, 12-10.5 at DieselManor

Try this for a photo. I bought the bolts from my local home improvement store for about $12.

Why won't it fit? If you have a 10.25 or 10.5 rear end it will fit.
