99f350sd where did you get the FTVB from? I bought mine a few years ago and then not a month after Greg the owner of FTVB closed shop and no one could find or get a hold of him. When i first installed mine the 1-2 would chirp gears and the 2-3 would also. I called him and he told me to send it back OR to soften the shifts just remove the shims in the valves. They are shipped with two shims in each shift valve when Greg ships them out, i took both shims out of each shift valve and it was good. But after a year of driving on it it came back again. i pulled the valve body apart and sure enough the shift valves were shiny on one side from them wearing against the wall in the valve body. So i went back to stock and then it was all good again, just stock soft shifts. Thats when i bought my SCT from Mike at Five Star and nothing against him but i never liked the shifting. It was soft at the wrong times and never fast enough or firm enough under WOT shifts. Then for some reason my 1-2 got weird like i said above, so i had mike send me my tunes with no trans adjustments and i drove it like that for almost a year. Now that i did the TransGo kit Ive never been happier!
all i can say is after talking to Brian from BTS and having him explain why and what goes wrong with the stock 4R100, and having experienced some of them valves sticking and digging against the valve body I'm a true believer that what the TransGo fixes and how he designed it is the only way to get it perfect and thats its going to last and stay that way....
I got it from the diesel stop..Bob Riley...He was getting them from the same guy that did yours..So I can do the same as you did to one of their valve bodies?
no i bought the e40d-HD kit from TransGo. The 4R100 tugger kit has full tq converter, etc parts that can only be installed if you remove the transmission and pull it all apart. Just call Brian at BTS and talk to him and buy whatever he tells you to get. I bought -he bit plus other parts and it was shipped for all under a %100 dollars...
heres BTS number:1-870-422-3673
if you want too, pull the valve body and remove the shifts valve ONE BY ONE. I removed all of mine and layed them on the work bench and each gear had different springs even though they look identical. I messed them up and the shifting was all over and Greg wasn't happy when i called back and said i had to send it too him because of what i did. But just pull everything and remove the shims in the shift valve from the 1-2 and 2-3 shift bores. Leave 4th alone and then see if that helps, if it doesn't THEN id call Brian at BTS and order the right stuff from him
this is what the valve and shims look like out on the work bench
see how many shims are in each valve. usually at FTVB has two shims per valve id take them all out if it were me....
one thing i don't like about the FTVB is they only use one heavy spring for the bore valve and then he uses shims to control the valve behind it. Where TransGo uses three springs for the bore and just a simply steel valve and stock spring for the shift valve. This way the shift is softer at cruising speeds and harder under WOT, not like the FTVB thats just hard all the time
i will say this another member just started a thread about rebuilding his 4R100 by himself. He was having a horrible hard 2-3 shift, when he pulled it apart the snap ring broke in half and caused some issues. Now i know that this is mostly a diesel problem because the gas motors even the V10 don't have the grunt to snap the parts like the 7.3 can. But since yours isn't that bad and it started after your FTVB install id say its just the common factory parts problems. Either way call Brian and talk to him, hes like a repair manual that answers you! LOL
Were you able to install the entire kit? Transgo's website says that for the HD kit and for the torque converter lock up trans removal is required. But based on what you said you did not have to remove the entire trans just drop the pan. I'm hoping to do the steel valves the tq converter lock up and the hd kit. But am not sure if the whole thing needs to be dropped.
Interesting thread so far Scaler. I have similar issues when I was running my Banks box tunes and without them. Just got an SCT X3 and really enjoy the Perf seting on it. Mine seemed to straighten up with the SCT installed. Still very interested in the tugger kit. Springer Pop had alot of info from putting the kit in his a while ago. Havent been able to pull the trigger on mine yet, but with this tuner, I will be putting it off a little further I think. Do you have any pics of your install?
