Water pump Backing plate?

Water pump Backing plate?
What year did they stop using the backing plate? I have a 71 block that has one, but the 79 block I have does not have one. The major difference I see is that the early block dipstick goes throught the timing cover and would be in the water if there was not a backing plate. The 79 has the dipstick through the side of the oil pan.
I guess the question I have is should my 79 block have a backing plate and someone left it out. I noticed that the water pumps are different also. Thanks.

Water pump Backing plate?
I'm not familiar with post'78s, but since Ford dealers still stock the plate, I can't imagine the pumps being that much different. I use an econoline oilpan with the dipstick at the side and still require a plate behind an Edelbrock waterpump, supposedly fitting all 429/460s.

I did a water pump on a freinds 86 460 and it had a plate behind the water pump, also off the three early 460 blocks I have dismantalled in the last few years only one had the plate, either they where left out at pump replacement or where never there. As far as I am concerened it can only help with coolant flow. Eric
