I have a 98 Explorer V8 with 92K miles on the motor--while I have read a few threads with other/similar symptoms, most seem posted by 4L owners.
The noise is prevalent at all time--less so as you get to overdrive with less RPMs. It sounds like the engine has a supecharger somewhere under the hood (it doesn't!). It's a medium to somewhat high pitched whine. I seems more located on the right side of the motor but probably could travel from anywhere--I thought it was the alternator and attempted to change the bearing (don't ask how that went--other than expensive). anyway it's not the alternator. Putting the big screwdriver/quasi-stethoscope on ps pump, water pump, ac pump--there're all pretty much the same in terms of noise and vibration.
Any ideas...have a trip or two this summer and don't want to startout and become a cripple on the road.
Well-lot of lookers but no suggestions; perhaps this will help someone in the future--after taking the belt off, the grooved idler pulley was very rough to the feel. replaced and noise is gone
