I Just bought a 97 F250 4x4 w/ a 460. I've never owned an auto transmission before, and . When I driving home, after getting off the highway and merging onto another highway, when I hit the gas again to accelerate there was a long hesitation then a CLUNK. after that it ran off-beat for a few miles while the OD "OFF" light was flashing. Everything cleared up in about five minutes and appears to be back to normal. Do I have something to worry about? I read a small blurb about this in the owner's manual but it wasn't very clear on why it happend.

The OD trans in my little '98 ranger is doing exactly the same thing--clunk when shifting into 3rd when the od-off light blinks.
Can you read these codes yourself or do you have to take it someplace to get it done? How to read the codes?
