More take off power

Hello I have a 1990 f150 5.0 4X4 .I would like it to have more pick up off the line.I guess I need to change the rear end gears I'm really not concerned with having alot of top end.If I change the rear gears does it effect the front gears (because its 4x4)How can I find out what gears are in my truck ?Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Aug-02 AT 10:17 PM (EST)]If you have a 4x4 you're going to need the same gears in the rear as front. What gear ratio do you currently have?

The tag on the cover of the rear differential will tell you what the ratio is. There is also a sticker on the front axle.

Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster American Thunder Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .

Check out my Gallery for a look-see.

Then theres:
99' Mustang GT 4.6L
88' F-250 Heavyduty 4x4 351/c6
95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 with a
3 spd column shifter. Weighs around 7,000lbs w. 65mph top speed, who wants to race me!

There should also be a sticker around the driver's side door that has info regarding weight limits, tire pressure and all that kind of stuff. I believe it will have the axle code. If you still have the owner’s manual, you can look up the code in that. If not you can post it on this forum and someone should be able to tell you what it is. Also believe that the VIN also has the axle code buried in it somewhere too.

The vin doesn't tell ya that. Either the axle code on the door jam sticker, the tag on the axle, or the sticker on the front axle. My rear has 3.55 and my front is 3.54, they have to be within 1% of eachother.
