Engine Swap
I have a 1990 f-150 4x4 with a 5.0L mated to an AOD. The engine has some blow-by, uses oil, misses under a load, and doesn't have enough power to pull the 33x12.50 tires. All this with a little over 90k miles on it. I would like to swap out the 5.0 for a 400M from a thunderbird with about 60k miles on it. I know I am going from EFI to carb, but I know the 400 is going to blow the pants off of the 302. I just need to know if this operation will work. will the 400 bolt to an AOD transmission, if not, what do I have to change? will this be a hard process. Will the engine even work in my truck? I think that swap would be way too much work.
The 400 has got the same bolt pattern as the 429/460, and will not bolt to your AOD.
I'm guessing that you are going to have to have a lot of modifications made to make it work right, I would suggest that you put that money into rebuilding your 302 (that's what I did, look at my gallery, I've got NO issue with turning my 33X12.50s
)
I had a 400 in my first Bronco, it was an '80 that the previous owner had swapped in the 400 in place of a 351M (that was a direct swap) It was completely in stock form, 2bbl and everything. It had great low end grunt, but wouldn't breathe well above 3000 RPM. I wasn't very impressed with it.
If it's more CID you want, I'd say go with the EFI 351W, that would be a bolt-in operation, and it would still be emissions legal. I prefer EFI for off road anyway, you don't have to worry about fuel starvation when you're at steep angles.
Anyway, that's my .02 worth
