Throwing this out there, I' m sure the spline count on the rear axles of an 8.8 would be different from a truck and car, but, what would the spline count be for a 1983 F 150 with a 300-6, it's an open carrier, are all the trucks the same?
If you go to Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market and pretend to be looking for a axle shaft for your truck, you will see in 1983 that the 9 inch Ford rearend was available(they call it a removeable carrier) and the 8.8 Ford was available(they call that the non-removeable carrier). But as you can see they list no axle spline count for the 8.8, only the 9 inch(31 spline). That tells me whatever the spline count is on the 8.8 truck rearends, they are all the same for these trucks. If they were not, they would ask if you were looking for spline count A or spline count B.
If you look at Summit Racing's website, they list spider gear kits for the 8.8 with a 28 spline count or a 31 spline count. If you plug in your truck, and look under drivetrain, then differential components, and then direct fit axle shafts, they list a 31 spline as fitting your truck.
8.8s in mustangs have a 28 spline, 8.8s in explorers have 31 spline and either 4.10s PR 3.73s. We use the driver side axle from 2 explorers and use that as a poor mans upgrade in our mustangs
1980/89 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog sez: 1983 F150 8.8 = 25, 28 or 31 spline axleshafts. Need the rear axle ID tag number to discover what the spline count is.
No tag? You'll have to pull an axle and count 'em.
