My 92 f-250 diesel, has a tach that only will work for a couple seconds if and only when I accerate heavy, like I said just for a few seconds it will go to say 3000 and then back down. What does the tach run from, could this be a easy fix? loose wire or something like that? thanks

The sensor is on the top of the front cover to the right of the injection pump. It is a magnetic sensor that takes pulses from a toothed ring on the pump drive gear.

You can try to clean the sensor but if this works it seems that most fail again in a short period time, then most guys just replace it and never look back.

It's located just behind and slightly to the right of the oil filler cap. It has two wires coming from a "BIG NUT" sits at about a 60 degree angle.
