I own a 1985 f150 two wheel drive six with a four speed. I recently bajad through a ditch and was forced to cahnge tie rods and drag link. Several nights ago i turned Through a drive way and poping noise came from right under my left foot. I think it might be ball joint but there are still tight with a little play any suggestions.
ok likely progression here, chack the hub to make sure its fully disengaging adn engaging. than check teh drive axle u joints that will make a popping sound, but that only turns when the trucks in 4x4 or when the hubs are engaged. i have the same problem with the right side, its only a 15$ part though. so im happy with that.
If you took a hard hi you might want to look at your front cab mount. had a truck that would do that turned out that a cab support was rusted out. welding in a new support solved that problem. might also want to check the sway arm and radial arm bushings.
You should have an arm that goes from the axle back to a bracket on the frame rail. This is called the radius arm, and in the bracket is the radius arm bushing. The bushing or the frame bracket may be damaged. It would be about where you describe the noise.
oops, was thinking about what can break when bajaing, the troubleshooting chart in my head was stuck in 4wd. as for as what to look for i cant think of anythign that hasnt already been mentioned, unless your tired rubbing one of those pieses of plastic that came loose.
I think that there was a TSB out for a loose crossmember. The symptems where a popping sound from the front of the truck when pulling into driveways or other similar things...
I think that it was the number one crossmember and the tsb covered something like 80 - 96 or some crazy range like that. It's an annoyance thing, not safety. The soluton was to drill out the rivit and replace it with a bolt and weld the bolt after you tighten it.
My 83 does it, and my mechanic said not to worry. I remember hearing about the tsb in like 96 when I was still driving my bronco.
