Not sure exactly how speakers are measured but here's something:
These ^^^ are from a '97, same size up through at least '03. Also measured a set of Polk Audio spec'd by Crutchfield as direct fitting, same dimensions. They call them 5" x 7" which seems to be a measurement of the hole they fit into:
This dimension should serve your needs Wizzy!

Better to flip speakers over & measure across the grille.
Then you see these FORD OEM speakers measure ~8" long by ~5.75" wide.
However speaker sizes are kind of like dimensional lumber & the actual measurements differ from the stated sizes. We all know a 2X4 does not measure 2" by 4" & so it is with speakers.
FORD used 6X8 speakers in Econoline for years.
Many aftermarket speakers are designed to fit both 5X7 openings & the larger 6X8 size. Often w/o adapters.
Have pair of new, sealed box, 4 way SONY XS-R5744 speakers that fit 5X7 or 6X8 openings available.

They will fit, (5 1/4, 5X7, & 6X8) but you might need adapters. Go to www.Crutchfield.com. They have all the information you'll need. I realized you said you have the speakers, but one really cool feature of ordering from Crutchfield, is they include all the wiring harnesses and adapters for free. I put 6X8's in my 1999 E-350XL.
