exhaust clearance

I was told that i would have to find another place for my spare tire if i wanted to run duals on my 2002 f-150 supercrew FX4. The guy said there wasn't enough room to run a pipe between my shock and my spare because i have a full size 265-70-R17 spare. Anyone else have this problem or is it really possible?

well, I MIGHT BE able to help , I have a 2000 F-150 with the 4x4 OFF ROAD package, and I'm running 265/70/17's as well, and I just got a dual flowmaster installed with no problem, two pipes right outn the back , you migth wanna get a second opinion from another technician.

You want 3" minimum clearance around the tire. Much closer and you could melt it, esp. if you tow with your truck.

Someone else in another thread had a good thought on this topic - why not wrap header tape around the pipes where they are close to the spare? Anyway, hth.

We have run pipes alot closer than 3" to the spare with no bad results. The tails really don't get that hot. My 86 F-250 has the tails within 2" of the spare and my 94 Aerostar has duals on it and the pipes are within an 1" of the two plastic junk wells(extended) and have never bothered them. If anyhting was going to melt those wells would be the first to go.
