backup camera

I have a backup camera I want to install on the back license plate. I could run a wire from the battery under the whole truck for power but thats more work than id like to do if theres an easier solution. Is there anywhere to tap into near the back license plate?

Also, is there any grommits or easy ways to get a wire from the engine bay to the cabin?

Lotta guys will tap into the trailer wiring harness for power.

You are supposed to power it off of the reverse light wire so the camera wont be burning all the time. I was actually working on this some today. The power wire I ran up next to the tail light wiring and the video cable as well, then up through the grommet behind the right hand tail light, that way there is less of a chance for water to enter the body as it is so high up and behind a gasket . My video cable is actually a subwoofer cable that I snagged from monoprice. more shielding and heavier sheath to withstand chaffing. I am also going to be picking up my power from the RH reverse light. I dont have the wires hooked up yet as my deck isn't in yet. I still have to put some split loom where it goes by the hitch as well. There is plenty of room in that grommet for pass through. The last picture also show the location of the mysterious parking aid module.

I plan on using an ACC fuse in block to power both monitor and camera and put it to a switch so I can turn it on whenever I need as long as truck is on. Also so I won't accidentally leave it on all the time.

My local Best Buy charged me $75 to install my backup camera with lifetime warranty on the labor as long as I own the truck. You might want to check them out. $75 is nothing considering the labor involved. I like to work on my truck as well but it was too good to pass up. I could not believe how cheap it was but that was about 2 years ago so not certain if things have changed.

Just power it through a toggle switch like I did. Click on my link.

I did read your link... Nice install, if I were running a solution similar to yours that would make sense, but I am running an aftermarket deck as I said above, and I do not need to run a power wire front to back for the camera when a perfectly useful switched power source is available nearby, the less runs the better IMO.

I saw the mention of the deck, but I thought that was an aside. It wasn't clear you were gonna view the camera image through the deck until your latest post. That's why I had the post.

Yeah, mine has an overhead monitor and I wanted a better source than the add-on Audiovox the PO had under the seat. That and I need my iPhone compatibility and USB compatibility.

Now onto the second part of his original question, where are all of you running your rear power through? Running a 4 gauge to the rear to supply amp and inverter. The amp looks like it's going to fit best on the drivers side under the middle seat. And of course the battery is on the passenger side... I'm trying to avoid snaking this thing all over the engine compartment. Any secret passageways I need to know of? I know there is a body plug near the column somewhere I still have to look at.

I bolted mine to the third light lens. I did that for a wider angle for viewing. I have mine wired to the aftermarket radio. It's a kenwood rear view camera.

I have the exact same camera I would advise taking some superglue or whatever sealer around the seams, they are not very water resistent.

Thanks
